emergency kit

Post by girlwomble »

hi there

I have just got myself a 1972 Dormy camper and I want to put together an emergency kit for it.
Any suggestions what I should always carry with me?

Thanks

Hiya Amanda,

I'm surprised that nobody has answered this one yet. Try the following for starters. This list is the contents of the factory (OEM) tool kit stashed under the passenger seat in busses during the early seventies.
V-belt
Hub cap remover
Combination pliers
Reversible Screwdriver
Open end wrench (8mm/13mm)
Double ended socket wrench
Socket wrench (13mm)
Long bar for socket wrench
Tool bag
And accompanying the tool kit under the seat was a Billstein jack. Pretty spartan but this is a good place to start.

Find yourself a copy of John Muir's "How to Keep Your VW Alive" (commonly referred to the Idiot guide) if you don't have a copy already. Any VW place will have it or know of it. Most bookstores also have it. John has a good list of what spares to carry, what tools are needed, etc.

I (and the Idiot Guide) agree with what's above, as most things on the bus can be removed, replaced, adjusted with the tools that they provided from the factory. For spare parts, I'd also carry:

points, condensor, cap, rotor
fan belt (listed above)
valve cover gaskets OR
complete engine overhaul gasket set
fuses

A few other things to consider would be a good flashlight, one of those 12V air compressors (VERY handy!!), and a floor jack (the stock Bilsteins don't cut it for me).
