Portable/semi portable welding station

I have a couple of these laying around and I have thought about converting at least one to a welding table. I already have a small welding table but it is in the way all time as it doesn't fold up enough. the top does tilt up but the legs are fixed. Could I fix the leg problem... maybe but it is still large and has flanged slots for holding pieces on place which I do not like.

So, replace the two board that are 2' long by 5 1/2 inch wide, add some holes, angle iron around the sides to keep things flat and maybe toy with one corner to make a raiseable fence to assure 90° joins.

This way is wouldn't be too heavy and would fold up fairly tight... until I saw this tonight on Craigs list ($1200)

Oh Mama! so cool, so handy and it might even be easy to build.... just a bigged up version of the tool chest seat I did a while back. Its got my brain a-working for sure, for sure!! Damn!

I don't think I would set it up for a welding cart like this but then... It looks almost like there is a platform for a small vice which always comes in handle.

A couple of these for clamping and I would suspect that might be all I need. I already use these anyway.

Size wise it might be a bit smaller than the weldinstation I now have but so handier and easy to move.

yummy, yummy!

Think I would start with real welding table.....

There is already folding tables out there...HF has really cheap one... So no need to reinvent folding ones...

Something a little better than above (the HF thingie) ...

And personally as welding is dirty work, I don't think welding on top of tool box is ideal...

Looked at folding table and found them wanting that led me to something like the Certiflat series...

I have the HF one. Think I paid less than $60 with a coupon and use the hell out of it. Not only a decent welding table with the slots and edge guides, but also doubles as a portable tool stand or rest and painting stand for small parts (with a small piece of plywood sitting on it).

Hi Dale, thanks for the information. The first one was very interesting and was somewhat in-line with one of the "things" I have been thinking about.

1) I already have one of the HF units. Some things I like about and some things I don't but mainly, even folded up it is in the way. It doesn't store flat!

2) The Hobart unit... ahhhh… it does look like it folds flat, looks to be fairly small but the lacks holes for clamping.

3) The top one you posted... now that is interesting! It would save a lot of work. I didn't know that a top could be had that small. I watched some of the video (and noticed that there were people buying them as we watched ( ).

One of the things that still bother me is, while considtant with the big welding tables, the holes are in alignment vertically and horizontally which can allow weak spots. The few times I did something like that the holes were off-set horizontally and vertically.

These are squashed/close together but the concept is there. No real paths for flaw to travel straight.

4) The one I went "Nutsy Fagan" over I didn't like some features right off the bat but other features I still do like. I don't like the top being right over the welding gear so that sparks and droppings could drop on the easily damaged parts of the welding equipment. Also I do not weld but heavy stuff or to real construction I am a bit concerned over the thickness of the table.

The idea of everything being in a central location vs. the separate welding cart with lines to the outlet and lines to the table does make a long setup in a small garage.

I think I could come up with something else if I wanted to.

5) The fold up table with adjustable spread: since I have two of them laying around I could custom make my own very flat (in a fold up situation) welding table. I already have used them to do several projects like welding suspension stops and adjusters on a front beam. One of the reasons for new wood pieces in them.

I also made an adjustable height small welding table that sits on a HD truck brake drum. Almost too heavy to manure around (the word I used was intended in order to keep the STF site clean   ). Like the first URL you posted (the video) I use angle iron to ensure that the table stayed flat as you can be putting a lot of heat into the table.

Not sure just what way I will go yet but I am assuming something will be done before too long. Thanks again for the 'put as I did get some info out of it.
