Project 400 HP
Hi,
I've been lurking on this turbo forum for a while becoming green with envy on your turbo builds.
Enough small talk.....
The Details:
-1973 standard 1200 beetle
-Converted to IRS
-2110cc T1 built by me
-Porsche Cooling (looks cool)
-Holset HX40 turbo
-Megasquirt 1 V3 (currently building it, car was running on on V2.2)
-Wasted Spark (via ford single coil pack)
-VWSPEEDSHOP SP1 manifolds without throttles.
-VWSPEEDSHOP single billet throttle body 52mm
Thats about all i can thing of at the minute.
The Engine is a CB super race crank, 82mm, AA hyper slipper pistons 90.5, CB UNI tech rods, 044 heads oval ported 40x35, Webcam 86B cam, 9.3:1 compression and 1mm deck.
all rotating assembly dynamically balanced to as near as perfect as we could (its balanced to spin way more then most T1's!)
rods end to end balanced, pistons balanced, heads CC's ect ect i really took my time on this build and spent money where it was needed and spent hours and hours where i was able to.
So here's my vision.
the engine runs well, was on GSXR ITBs and ran well as a street car, cool ect good power from pretty much idle.
the idea behind my possibly too large of a turbo is to have the same power low down i did before off boost, and it to have nice manners for general driving.
Then when i rev it out (guessing it will start to build boost about 4.5-5k rpms? i'll have that optional huge hit of power.
will it work out like i want it to? don't know.... i will learn a lot though and i'll be posting my findings.
Cheers
Andy

Sounds fun! Looking forward to hearing how that turbo works for you!

Re: Project XXX HP
I hope you get it to spin. I know Honda guys are getting boost out of HX30 with a 2.0.
I have a second parts WH1c if you want something smaller.

Re: Project XXX HP
my friend has a HX30 on his over bored 1.8t so its 1.9, and that boost pretty quick! i want it to boost a bit later on mine really...
Currently deciding on injector size, its hard to find that balance between size and idle. and which injectors will give me both with a good spray pattern and resolution.

Modern injectors are pretty good, I'm running 1000cc bosch fuel injectors on my EJ20 turbo with no idle problems.

Here is some inspiration for you. This fellow is getting 300 HP out of a 1641 with an HX35. I have a feeling he's turning some revs but he gets it done.

Your selling him short, 392hp!!!buguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2019 2:25 pm Here is some inspiration for you. This fellow is getting 300 HP out of a 1641 with an HX35. I have a feeling he's turning some revs but he gets it done.

That’s one I’ve seen before, I think e85 is a great help though, sadly not available in the UK (within reason)
I’ll be honest, my long term goal is 400bhp..... may not be with this engine but I will get there.
Goal for this engine is to beat my friend with his 1.8t vag mk1 caddy with a HX30..... we reckon it’s about 300bhp....
I’m happy to spin the engine up, it loves to rev. I may adjust my valve spring situation, currently using a special kind of single spring, work find with my 86b to 6.5k rpm but may need to speak to stateside performance who sell them as ask if I should add they’re inner spring to it also.

Re: Project XXX HP
I don't know crap about crap, but it seems like the guys that are plunking down the big bucks for a modern turbo are the ones that are making the big power.
I would definitely ask about running dual springs. Maybe you can crank it up to even more rpm??
E85 surely helps. You could spray water/meth to get pretty much the same result. With what you have I think 400HP is in your future! Your compression is higher than I think I've seen anyone boost an aircooled on though, so I'm interested to see how it works for you.

Re: Project XXX HP
Those 360cc injectors are a step up from what you had? I'm sorry you wasted money on those tiny things, that engine should make 200hp at low boost. You'll be out of injector before you hit wastegate boost pressure. I also highly recommend the Bosch 1000cc set sold by Injector Dynamics. Not cheap, but they are a good injector and have zero low pw control issues. My engine idles as lean as I want and at nice low rpm. That's more than I could say about the 2200cc injectors I experimented with this year!andy198712 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2019 3:29 pmIs that the deka ones? Black pencil style?

My .63ar t3/to4e starts boosting around 4500 if just cruising along and then mashing the throttle. It's a lot of fun to drive, but its not super practical on the street to rev these things out to 7500rpm every shift, though again, FUN. My new setup makes boost way earlier and holds it till I let off the throttle. That's fun too! Though super complicated. A modern single would probably get you the best of both worlds.
I think that there is a misconception out there about boost. It generally isn't something that you get if you don't want it. It's not like having a smaller turbo that CAN spool at 3000 means that it WILL spool if you are at 3000. I can take mine to the rev limiter and make almost no boost if I want to. It takes serious will power to do it. But my engine will gladly rev through the entire range at 20% or so throttle and not wake up the turbo. BUT if I want it, all I have to do is give it a little more and then 200 more hp are available. Turbos are pretty cool.

Re: Project XXX HP
I'm running 60 lb. injectors on my 1679cc engine and have a great idle. They should support somewhere around 480 crank hp if my math is correct.

Yh those new garrets seem pretty crazy, loads of flow and power at lower and lower boost pressures! Maybe down the line.
At the minute a lot of it is to get me started,
My plan is to really creep up on the boost so I can tune it nicely...start super low and work up slowly (but defiantly and progressively, i love power )

I’ll look into those injector dynamics...
I just wanted some injectors I could get easily in the uk to get me going really, that weren’t too big, I was worried about oversizing and looking resolution on the VE table... if that makes sense? And as such I was aiming at 440,s once I get going.
But you reckon go bigger?
Yeah I know what you mean about as and when boost comes in, I guess I want it to be able to pootle around town ect, still using that great low end pull and then like you say, if I want to rev it out I’ll have a lot more available ....!
