Welcome to STF and retirement. Both are good places to but the car part can drive you broke (pun intended) and to drink.

Hello everyone!

I'm Olivier from France and I'm soon picing up a VW Beetle when I come back home at the end of my 5-year contract abroad in a couple months. It used to be my grandfather's, but he sadly left us last month and I inherited his old car, which I really want to bring back to driving condition. Unfortunately, I have limited experience with that kind of project (I did work on repairing a colleague's UAZ-469, but my role was minor, I mainly sanded and painted, and changed a couple joints there and there), and that's why I'm now here.

I'll provide pictures as soon as I'm home, and hope I'll learn from all of you and that I'll be able to join the club!

See you soon on the forums.

Welcome and sorry for your loss....cars can provide a great connection to our loved ones so I am sure you will cherish your time spent working on and driving the vw....lots of great resources here and since these are very simple cars, they are a great option for your first real adventure into the hobby.

Of course without photos, it doesn’t exist!

Thanks! Unfortunately, the last pictures that were taken of that car are yellowing photos that were taken with a disposable camera in the early 2000s, somewhere in an album at my parents' house. However, I'm soon coming back home, in early May, and will photograph the car to my heart's content by then.

Hello, I just signed up here. My family owns a '86 VW Beetle. It used to be my Dad's first car and he's no longer sure what to do with it so I'm looking for ways to restore it. Glad I found an existing community like this. How do I post pictures here, seems like I have to use url instead of attachment? Thank you.
Finally got a set of 8-ball chrome dub wheels. Excited to see how it'll look when installed.

Page down to "Attachments" then choose "Add Files". That will allow you to pick then you can attach the picture (be careful of the size of it... I use 640 X 480 size [for what it is worth]) to the post. The "place in line" button will attach the picture to where the curser is sitting. For example"

Well here it is. Just testing. It looks big. Maybe I should've taken it further away.

Hi All,
Long time lurker, rare to post. This is my second air-cooled (personally) though my family has had many over the years. My wife and I were married and drove away in our '69 tin-top westy, but sold it a few years later to fund a cross country move.

Here we are, back in Vermont, living the dream, and raising our 2 young children. I just picked up a zenith blue '67, and am excited to get started returning it to glory. It has some pretty good bones, but also has some needs. I'll likely start a thread, but am looking forward to all of the sage advice, shared knowledge, and even some of the BS that STF has assembled over the years.

I don't even know where to begin to get some of the pertinent info (serial #'s, for example) but as I get some space cleared out in the workshop, and start the teardown, I am sure it will all be revealed.

For now, here's some pics of when I dragged her home in late January, and a heartfelt hello!

I'll be building a rally car/ backroad basher, that will also likely see some NEHA (www.hillclimb.org) series racing for added fun. I've got some wider 356 wheels, and some alternate tire sizes to play with, as well as a number of mechanical things to start with on the bug. Planning on getting her running, making her safe (brakes and suspension and tune up basics), then working on the cosmetics and rust as time goes on.

My buddy J and I got her running quite easily with an alternate fuel tank (seller told me it had a fuel line leak), and she runs (seems?) pretty damn healthy. WIth a few zip ties, the tank was good enough for a few miles of smiles and some donuts around our rural neighborhood. I recently was hooked by the thread about blow-through turbos by scott the viking, and now I may just have to do something about it... but first things first.

Here I am with my pit crew (1 and 3)

Cheers,
Tim

Welcome to STF posting. Less lurking and more posting. That bug looks like a lot of fun in the future.
