Re: Safari Turbo/Megasquirt Fuel Injection Project
There are plenty of ways that I can try to make more power with my setup. I do have a bigger turbo......but that introduces lag. If there is lag I could do the compound turbo setup but you get into packaging when you go that route.
Every winter I usually come up with something so I will continue to do that in the quest for more power. Will I hit 300 hp??? I doubt it.... but I can always use it as a goal.
I can't really use the power I have since last year I couldn't beat on it due to the trip. This year I can do a little more. If I can get a consistent 25 lbs through the full pull it will outrun most anything in my county.
I'll wait for Chip to fill us in on the compound turbo setup. I would love to put the HY-35 on top of this turbo or else use my TD04-9B as the little with the TD04L-13T as the biggy. Controlling boost would be a challenge.

I have been looking more and more into twin scroll. The big hurdle there is you would really need a quick spool valve. Seems that with a quick spool valve you can really step up the turbo size, and still have early boost and plenty of cfm on top. From what I've seen a quick spool valve is like $600. No way I'm paying that, especially if I would already be spending good money on a nice turbo. Otherwise, like you said, you would have to give up the driveability, which I'm not willing to do. I'm probably not even going to be happy with the cam I have along with the bigger turbo I may or may not ever get put on.
Personally.... Nitrous might be the answer for me. Easy and cheap.

Re: Safari Turbo/Megasquirt Fuel Injection Project
While the rocker geometry is kicking my ass I moved on to something a little less stressful to fix.
Took my bumper over to the the "Fab Extraordinaire" neighbor and in an hour he had the hitch all rebuilt. I did cut the tube for him and put the fisheyes on the ends so all he had to do was cut off the old and weld the new in.
This afternoon after dinking with my geometry and getting all pissed off I grabbed my battery powered grinder and cleaned up the bumper and then gave it a coat of primer.
It's looking good. I started the black but ran out of the fast drying paint so I'll have to head over to "Ace Is The Place" tomorrow if they are open.......and grab a couple new cans of satin black.

Nice. It's good to step away sometimes. I've been having the same troubles around here. Nothing seems to be working out. I've been catching myself getting extremely angry lately because nothing seems to work out anymore. Time to step back, regroup, and focus! Looks like your close to being ready for another road trip!

Put a little paint on the bumper and its Satin Black again instead of scratched up. It looks like new again.
That bumper has some years on it since I installed it in 2004.
Since I'm going to be off work till about the 6th of April I should be able to move along on the buggy. I messed with the Valve Geometry again for a while today and I think I have come up with a setup I can live with. It's just a balance between where the shoe rubs on the valve lash cap......how half lift measures through the rocker shaft and how straight the pushrod is with the adjust at half lift. You have to decide what is good.
I found nothing is perfect so you get it as close as you can and I think I am there.....if not...I fix it next winter.
I'm going to send the pushrods off for shortening or else try it myself....I haven't decided which one. I really don't want to wait a week while I send them to California and back. I could have the engine back in and almost ready to go by that time.....

Bumper's looking clean!
Got any more mods this season besides the engine?

Better to be blown than to suck!

Weather is teasing us with some sun and a couple warmer days but then it gets cool and goes back to rain. April is usually pretty wet and the forecast is calling for it.
Buggy season will be coming up in about 3-4 weeks so I need to kick it in the arse to be ready for it.

I'll be adding a ball mount to the carrier so I can tow the trailer behind with the carrier mounted. I need that to carry the comforts of home if we ever go camping in it.
I would like to add some side rails to the pan but might do that some other time. All they would be good for is holding a gallon of fuel and using as a step to get in and out.

Re: Safari Turbo/Megasquirt Fuel Injection Project
I got my pushrods cut to length yesterday.......
So I got to work today and installed them. The length ended up at 10.630 inches. I ended up having my neighbor cut them down for me on his Bridgeport Mill. He couldn't chuck them up in his lathe but the Mill worked just as well.
All of them are within .005-.010" except one is 0.20" shorter. Close enough for me.
Put the tin and exhaust on and it is ready to hang on the transmission..........

Re: Safari Turbo/Megasquirt Fuel Injection Project
Worked on the buggy today.
I got a lot of stuff done. Installed the engine and kept going from there. Here are some better pics of the intake I installed last winter.
They are built on IDF EFI manifolds with a 3 inch plenum welded on and a 2 inch intake for the center section.
This is about half the "Stuff" installed so far.
Bumper fit perfectly so I had to test fit the carrier.....I like how it sits.
This side needs a little more work yet.
The oil cooler tins need to be installed, the battery needs to be hooked up and the spark plug wire need to be connected.
I'll probably work on it tomorrow since we are still on lock down and will be all week. I should have it pretty well done by the end of the day.
I think I'll tow it to the car wash and give it a good cleaning.

Man I really like that intake set up. Nice and short. And of course the nicest welds ever.

Never seen an alternator stand quiet like that? looks lightened and a spot for a idler pulley
