I am experiencing high oil temps (+230 deg) on my new 2.4L, 10:1CR Engine. This is at cool ambient conditions of 65 deg. Currently using 96 row Mesa cooler mounted in rear fender well of a Porsche 912. No fan. Tangerine racing oil bypass and 180 deg thermostat. Running 15-40 Rotella oil.
I have a 911SC front cooler set up available, salvaged from wrecked race car.
Is my 26mm Schadek oil pump up to the task of the front cooler? Pump was sourced from EMS, modified to fit tightly in Type 4 case.

I run a type 4 in the bus and I would suggest you look for sources of heat before cooling the oil, it could be lean and you’re burning up your heads - do you have a head gauge?
Also, are you sure the oil is that hot? Where are you measuring and have you calibrated in boiling water? My gauge in the old bus was 10-12 degrees out (hot) and I spent ages chasing that!!
Your CR is quite high - have you had rolling road or any other setup?
It could also be your 96 plate cooler isn’t getting sufficient air flow?
How’s your tinware?
Hope that helps - chasing heating issues is a drag but worth going through it.

I will do some more heat tracking and checking.
This is a fairly aggressive engine.
Cam is a 163/86b. Effective CR with my set up is about 8.5.
Air flow is ok, given the location and no fan. Once I verify gauge, etc a fan would be the next step
Going to a front cooler will be a last resort. Just wondering if the pump is up to it

First off, the Porsche cooler is designed to run at a much lower pressure. In a 911, it’s pressurized by the scavenge stage and dumps right into the rear tank, so very low pressure.
On a VW, with conventional oil system, the cooler runs at full oil pressure. Don’t think the Porsche cooler will be happy. The Porsche cooler is a huge volume also, I would advise against it.
Second, I’d check your timing and mixture. Very good chance you’re running too lean under load and / or too much advance.
How’s the tin work? Are you sure there is no hot air getting pulled back in?

In the meantime I am working on the issue
I used Thermax strips on the sump to check my gauge. If the strip is correct, oil temp is about 210 max. Just about right. Gauge is indicating higher

The oil pan is going to be cooler because It’s basically a big heat sink.
The easiest, accurate way of getting head temps are those sensors you put under the spark plugs. And also both heads should be tapped for a temp sensor, but I forget which side is used for the factory sensor.
Are you using carbs or injection?

Temp reading was after a long run, so heat sink should be totally saturated.
However I should have insulated the sensor.
Running dual Weber IDF 44’s with 38mm Venturi, 60 idles, 160 mains, 200AC. Was running 165 main, but was very rich.
I ordered a head temp sensor/gauge from Aircraft Spruce.
