Type 3 D-jet converting to EFI

Post by Wally »

The plan is to install EFI with a modern ecu and using the original type 3 intake parts with it.
Oh, its going in a type 3 notch ('69), so the idea is to keep everything under the lid and the type 3 intake is really nice and compact.

This is the donor engine:

Biggest issues are installing modern injectors (pico style) in the original manifolds and to install a modern TPS sensor onto the original plenum..

This is the axis of the intake mani:

Anybody did this already and got some pointers??

Most of this thread is my conversion. https://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopi ... 6&t=132864

Unfortunately most of the pictures are gone but I still have some of them and post up anything you find interesting.

Awesome link Max, thanks!! I could not have found that myself!

I will go trhough the 28 pages, but if you can say beforehand what your TPS solution has been, that would be great!
As I understand it, most all microsquirt or other stand-alone EFI guys use MAP based load for fuel tabels. Therefore they do not always need TPS info and can skip the TPS sensor completely.
I on the other hand really like TPS (alfa-N) as load-input tuning, with possible MAP correcting, if I go turbo. So, a TPS sensor is critical and they are all different and hardly anything fits these old style throttle rods/bars...

I have contacted Mario, he will look as well, tnx!

you could cut the D stub shorter, add a 3D printed adapter and stand off the modern TPS slightly?
Mario could probably help with the 3D print, if you don’t fancy having a go in Tinkercad and getting a local print done.

The idea is valid, but... preferrably I'd like to use and probably adapt a little, an existing TPS unit with 8mm D-shaped shaft. The fitting srews on eitehr side will probably be too wide in the plenum now, but there is meat to drill closer by.
Eventually the shaft can be shortened a bit if needed by the looks of the pic above.

Using 3D with a design and print by someone else (I don't have that experience or tooling) would have to be paid for per hour and for 1 TPS sensor, that would not be very interesting I fear...

I did find (from Max's old thread) a Bosch number, but had 7mm shaft... After some more digging, Bosch also made TPS for 8mm shaft and D-shaped, so I might have found a model that would be adaptable. I think..
BOSCH-0-280-122-016

Some further investigation is neccesary me thinks ;-)

Wally, I am using the Mexican version of the fuel injector system and went to a local junkyard and found some EV-1 body style 196 cc/min injectors to use in my megasquirt setup. The Bosch injector part number is 280 150 955. No need to switch to the pico injectors and create more work for yourself. I have a sortable spreadsheet of bosch injectors that list body type, cc/min, Resistance, etc. I found the one I wanted to use, went to RockAuto's website and did a search by part number, and then you can see what vehicle's that injector was installed. Then find one at the junk yard and go fishing for them...

As far as the TPS goes, you can buy them at CBPerformance >> https://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/7159.htm

and they also have an adapter that looks like will fit your stem >> https://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/5010.htm

You would only need to figure out how to get it to mount to the existing holes.

Yes, that is exactly the issue: hoping and praying the stem fits and adapting the mounting. Not a fun journey..

I had a brain fart today and went through my stuff as I remembered I still had an old 944 TB laying around.
Beware and behold: Its an exact fit!! Not kidding!

Bosch 0280 120 308 is the part number.

Aperently, also some Peugeot and Opel models have used it in the past, so its a regular item and lots of used ones still around.

Pics or it didn't happen:
944 TB, type 3 plenum with the 944 TPS sensor and the old 311 sensor on the desk:

It even uses a very common connection, as my modern ITB's from Speedshop use the same connection 8)
Image
In fact, the Speedshop parts also use an 8mm D shaped shaft, so if need be, those smaller TPS sensors could probably be made to fit also, but how cool is it to be able to use an exact replacement? I am really stumped

Of course, it might still be that the orientation (angle) could be off and maybe the old 944 part uses an uncommon signal or something, but for now, I am very happy!

What I did was make an adapter out of a large washer. A couple of nuts push the TPS out so the shaft doesn't need to be shortened.

To make the D in the shaft turn the TPS I just put some aluminum foil on the shaft and pushed the two together. It's hokey but it works well enough.

Sounds like you are covered.
I did find some internet chatter about a Volvo850 TPS which fits and is a typical TPS potentiometer with 3 connections. So worth a look if the 944 option has an issue. Might be the same bosch part though!

Unfortunately, I just measured with 5V on the outer contacts and it doesn't6 have a gradually sloping 0-5V resistence...
I could test it on my already EFI (turbo) bug with that same connector. It doesn't work :(

So, I might just need to adapt the smaller sensor that VWspeedshop also uses. Seems common sensor, but an adapter needs to be made for sure now.

Tnx Bruce, I will deffo check out the Volvo 850 TPS sensor now! :)

Try the middle contact to either of the others.

You can also try Antonio Trejo who supplies parts from Mexico. He probably can get a TPS as well.

Tbh, I don't want to rewire my superbug to try this as I think its very likely not gonna work: it has a contact switch at the end of the turn, you can feel and hear switch. I think this 944 one is more like the original TVS (throttle valve swith) then a TPS (throttle position sensor)
A true TPS sensor doesn't do this. It makes sense as these old n/a 944's were manifold pressure controlled anyways.
