Type 4 oil sump

Post by ouvw2 »

Hey everyone
I’m in the middle of my 2056 rebuild. Just wanted to refresh’s and up date this engine. I picked up a new sump plate for this motor and I’m not sure how this is supposed to bolt in. It’s nothing like a type 1. On top the are two holes were I believe it’s supposed to mount to something. Can some body please let me know how this is supposed to mount up.

Thanks in advance. Ouvw2

You're missing the spreader bar. See here:

Thanks Lanner
I guess I need to make one. I really don’t think they would sell this just by it self. I just need to get better pics or even measurements. If you guys have any ideas please let me know.

So do I have it right that this heavy little bugger hangs off the original single bolt that normally secures the stock sump plate?
I sure wish someone would come up with an add on plate that was secured a bit better.
I've had the threads fail once already on that section of the case.
Had it down to bare case and welded. Threads are loose again now. Arrrgh!
Weak point in the design and prone to leaks.

cheers

In my opinion the reason there is not a good solution for an extended sump on a Type 4 is because most people don't think the Type 4's need a deep sump . It is just another thing that VW fixed from the Type 1 design at the factory .
No matter where you go , there you are !

No it hangs on 2 bolts, bolted trough the sump in the spreader bar. You have to wiggle in the spreader bar in to the case, it is 'resting' on the bottom inner case part.
