cam gear advice please :)

Post by neilb »

so my type 4 build is starting to finally get started, i have my case cleared for the crank, drilled and tapped for the oil galley plugs and cleaned, crank and rods are sat in, so now is the time for the cam and cam gear, it's a fairly nice cam from what i gather, my question is using the original cam gear or a straight cut and slotted bolt on affair?

pros and cons for both?

thanks in advance

Most all performance cams get the gear bolted on.
(Duh, right?) :-)

In addition, a performance type 4 will often get converted to a type 1 pump.
Supply of old type 4 pumps is dried up, plus some like a bigger pump.
This means the cam gear gets spot-faced for bolts -and- shaved for pump clearance.
The type 4 store sells these modded gears.

Straight-cuts are exceedingly rare for type 4s, only if big heavy springs and cams are used.
Usually at the type1 lifter conversion level..
Mostly you'll find double-thrust cam bearings and factory cam gears modified.

If using a factory gear make sure it's an aluminum gear and not the far weaker magnesium.
Speedier than a Fasting Bullet!
