Hi all I’m after some advice, I currently have a 1600 bug with big valved heads, scat C35 cam and an running 8 psi boost with an AMR 500 in a draw through set up with a Weber DCOE 40. Now the engine is great and goes well but I’m thinking of rebuilding the engine to fit a counter weight crank and a light weight 8 dowel fly wheel. While the engine is apart I was wonder is there a better cam to use than the Scat C35 cam?
The C35 cam was meant to go into my 1915 build but I was curious how it would work in a 8.5:1 compression ratio 1600 and that was a mistake it was a pig to drive, that all changed when I fitted the AMR 500.
Away what would the best cam be for a super charged 1600 running 8 psi boost?
Cheers all

What do / don’t you like about the behaviour with the C35?

Hi Bruce
I love the cam but I’ve been told that it has to much valve over lap so was wondering what the best cam would be

The "best" cam will have to be custom.
A wider lobe separation helps, but it isn't that simple.
Take all the below with a huge grain of salt since my experience is with a larger engine and much larger twin screw supercharger.
You want to delay the intake opening but not the exhaust opening.
That requires different cam profiles for the intake and exhaust.
Depending on your heads, you want somewhere between 5 to 10 degrees more duration on the exhaust than the intake but somewhere around the same lift and somewhere between 110 to 114 lobe centers but ground to where the exhaust opening and intake closing are comparable to what a NA cam would be for the engine.
There just are not any "off the shelf" cam profiles from the usual VW cam companies that will have the right combination of duration and lift for the exhaust vs intake.
I am getting another one custom ground by a company outside the VW world, but it takes forever from a custom cam grinder.
The closest thing you will find off the shelf is probably from Joe Blow but the way he lists his cams looks like they are just normal profiles with a wider lobe separation, not customized valve events like I mentioned above.

The older I get, the faster I was.

Mick Percy from www.joeblow.me has a couple different supercharger specific Engle cam profiles. I have the JB200, which he recommended for my engine.
Boost is contagious.

Last time I ordered one Webcam does not take too long to make you a custom cam.... And they are nitrided.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: Best cam for a supercharged engine
See if you can find a copy of this book. It explains the best cam for superchargers. I had a cam made for my turbo, also in the book and it's amazing.
Best of luck.
