I am starting to slowly tear into my blue car to pull the Subaru engine out and see what happened with a throwout arm or clutch.

On another note, last Sunday was HotVWs Drag Day at Irwindale. We entered my Tan 69 bug into the Powderpuff class, my daughter Carlie placed third.

Gotta hate computers sometimes… I just wrote a huge reply only for it to vanish in thin air. So here’s the short version. This week I dropped the clutch and flywheel off with Kevin at Coolrydes Customs. He’s going to send it to Kennedy Engineering. I have new seats and interior for the car, once the car is running again, I’ll put the interior back in. I also have to do the timing belt on the engine but can’t do it until I have the flywheel back on. Hopefully I can get this going again fairly soon.

I put the clutch and flywheel on last weekend. I still couldn't find my flywheel lock tool so I had to buy another one from Vee Parts in El Cajon. I had to drill the hole in the flywheel tool to make it a bit larger. The cast EMPI uses must be a bit off, or maybe it was the paint they coated it with making the hole smaller. I'm not sure but it's working great now. My next step is to do the timing belt and water pump that I got from Outfront Motorsports. Also, pulling the engine was a huge pain because of the way I ran the wiring harness into the passenger area. I did not want to remove it from the car so I individually unhooked all of the wires while the engine was in place. I have decided that I'm going to pull the harness, connect it up to the engine and reinstall it like I had done when I first installed it. Hopefully that will be easier.

OK, so the engine has been back in the car for a few months now. I was working on cleaning up the front trunk and moving the air ride tank around before I got around to starting the car. When I first turned the key on, I expected the fuel pump the cycle on and then off, but it did not the radiator fan however, was on constantly when it should’ve been off so I did some troubleshooting and then finally the fuel pump came on, so then I started cranking it after a few cranks the engine locked up and stopped spinning. It was at that point that I realized that the fuel pump was running more than it should and the injectors were obviously letting fuel into the cylinders, and the radiator fan was still running. I double checked all the wires to make sure that everything was good. I connected the laptop to the ECU and it appears that my decades old ECU has decided to crap out. A couple people reached out to me in the Facebook group saying they might have an ECU that matches, but not sure if it works. The easiest solution for me would be to find an identical green and white G1 link ECU plug it in load my tune on it and start the car. At this point, I am researching Speeduino ECUs. They are the cheapest option out there, and even the most basic one is far more capable than the link ECU that I would be replacing.

Worth looking at the Rusefi UAefi unit. I’ve got one but haven’t used it yet. A lot higher spec than my Speeduino NO2C board but basically the same price. Has a wideband driver circuit built in, for example.
There are a few firmware options too. Rusefi, epicEfi and maybe others.
