Upright cylinder tins
Hi guys.
I'm Looking for info cutting and splicing together the w sets of tcylinder tins for my type 4 up right. I can't find it on here. Looking for if I cut them in half in the middle. Do I use 2 sets of 1 and cylinders for 1 and 2 cylinder or is it 1 x 1 and 2 cylinder and 1 x 3 and 4 cylinder.
Thanks

Re: Upright cylinder tins
2 sets of #1 and #3 , use the lower tins as well , the flange line is the right height to fit a cut down bug rear tin , A modified front tin works as well . That is my own design shroud that is a centre mount alternator and centred on the heads as well . So you would make your alternator stand first and then cut the hole in the tins to suit the shroud location .
I think there used to be a clip on Youtube of someone doing the conversion .

Re: Upright cylinder tins
So.
I've cut number 1 and 2 top cylinder tin in half.
I've also cut the 3 and 4 top cylinder tin in half.
Trimmed the number 1 cylinder to fit.
Trimmed the number 2 cylinder to fit.
Number 2 cylinder is actually the number 3 cylinder tin.
The old number 2 cylinder has the pressed into the steel number 2 symbol . So that's been cut out to transfer over to the new version of number 2.
Its reading complicated isn't it.
Both 1 and 2 tins now join in the middle, some pie cuts are needed to release steel tension, and to remove some metal in order to reshape it.
Next is a few mig tacks to make them one piece.
The I'll move over to the 3 and 4 cylinder tin.
It'll be a good achievement once it's done.

1 and 2 has holes in the side. Must of been used with 914 heads. I'll fill those in soon. I'm using AMC heads 42 x 36.
I could do with 4 x copper head rings for the 96 cylinders, but can't find a place that sells em. There's a bit of cylinder leakage. Not much seeing as I've used them with a turbo.. I've been told the copper rings fix this issue.

Number 2 side tin has arrived. It needs a modification to fit

It hugs the front face of number 2 head. I'll make it fit and do a pic of it. Number 1 tin, where the fuel pump should go will have to be made. I haven't got one

i've followed your stuff for a while now...2014 in the post above...lol... my car IS STILL on jack stands...but now actively making progress. I've had to replace the DTM i bought in mid 2000s for a CSP conversion since there was just NO way to change spark plugs without removing the shroud in my 59 bug.wreck wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2026 2:47 pm I will market this conversion in a year or two , a retirement project . hopefully make it more affordable then whats on offer now .

I love the room your design allows for in a tight/small engine bay.
