is a extra oil sump any good without a full flow pump

I put one on my 71 SB. I figure having an extra 1 1/2 quarts in there is better than not having it. I change my oil as soon as it starts to turn dark, about 1000--2000 miles I clean the strainer every other oil change & adjust valves as needed. Since I have no filter I just change oil more frequently. It also helped my car to run slightly cooler in the summer. If you do decide to get a sump the only one to get if your not doing a re-build, is the Gene Berg Sump. The other sumps require you to replace the 6 studs that now hold the exsisting strainer. There is one of those studs that you will not be able to replace unless the engine is out of the car,(unless your magician) if you do get it off you may not be able to get the new one in. The Berg sump uses the existing studs that are already there. Most guys that don't have the Berg sump only use 5 studs & don't bother with the 6th, resulting in an oil leak.

I also recommend the dump sump , make sure you don't forget to install the pickup tube extension ! . I'm told by engineering types it doesn't help with oil temp but evey one I've seen that also had oil temp. gauges , ran cooler . you CANNOT run a sump on a lowered car ! it'll hit , leak and then grenade your motor . the sump helps indepenently of the oil pump .

If you switch to synthetic oil , you'll see a drop in oil temperature .

Clean the strainer EVERY oil change ! find a magnet and drop in oil cover plate , it'll help out a bit .

If you have a external fliter use a Fram 977 it holds 1.5 quarts of oil. Steve
