Anyone know if Thing 181 axles are the same part as the 924/944. I have already found that the CV's (Type 4) and stubs are the same, but not quite locked in on the axles themselves. I have a set of 924 axles, but nothing to compare them with.
Thanks,
INSAYN

INSAYN glad to see you made it over here from buggy talk. I would assume the only factor here would be length since the 181 and 411 CVs are the same unit. I would be happy to crawl up under and measure if that will help. Good luck. Bob Ingman

You hangout at buggytalk, too? Cool!
You don't have to crawl under and get all dirty just for me. I have a set of bug axles, and Porsche axles, just not in the same location of my 2 car garage. I need motivation to bring them together. It is not killing me to know, but slighty intriguing at best. I have been digging in the u-pullits this fall, trying to see what all is usable off the 924/944 that normally would be harvested from a 181 Thing, for baja, buggy, and sandrail applications.
So, if you REALLY want to go crawling around in the dirt, just for me. Feel free, as then I won't have to dig through a box. Sounds good to me.
Thanks,
INSAYN

We have all been told that the Thing axle assy. is a bolt in for the bus to bug conversion, but if the bus trans is wider than the type I/Thing trans, wouldn't the axle be too long? I realize that lost of people run this so it must work. I am just wondering...

Don't make me go out in the cold garage and identify the actual axle length myself now.
I have been putting it off, because I am too lazy to just slap both on a counter and measure them.
OK, fine I'll go out and compare axle lengths between the 924's and stock bug.

Now that I am freaking cold, here is the verdict.
Bug axles measured 16-3/8"
924 axles measured 16-1/4"
With that said, there should be no problem mounting the CV's and axles to a bug with a stub axle from a Thing/924/944. I am not sure how much wider a bus box is over the bug, but it may be just right.

I measured my positively factory Thing axles tonight, and they are 16 3/16" long. Definitely not 16 1/4", and just a bit longer than 16 1/8". So, thats why I settled on 16 3/16". I might even be coaxed into selling these axles since I wont be needing them. I have SAW axles for my Thing CVs, but have since converted to 930s.

There is a good chance that the 924 I measured were 16-3/16", and not 16-1/4". I just butted them up to a 4x4 block of wood with the cv's still attached. Then used a square against the other end to take the reading between the two. That part of my tape measure has been kinked slightly and is harder to read.
