hey all;thanz for everyones suggestions in advance!i'm freshening up a 1500 SINGLE PORT THAT STILL RUNS GREAT .i was wondering if 85.5 piston/jugs will fit sraight into the 1500 case without machining.as i'd like to put some dualport heads and some kadrons on it.( i've been looking for some single port mani's,but no luck so far.)will this change my compression much?also .if the jugs look good will 1600 head fit on the smaller cylinders? i'm putting this motor in my wifes ghia to make room for my h/p motor and some much needed down time and painting of my '68.

I think they will just bolt in but I am not positive.
If you do have to machine the case I would go up, it would be the same amount of work to machine for 90.5 as it would 85.5.
To me the 1776 feels more just right like thats what should have been put in from the factory.

The 1600 pistons and cyls will slide right in. Keep those 1500's. A lot of guys doing correct resto's would like to have those. The 1600's will up your compression by a bit, but not enough to worry about. And yes, a 1600 head will fit on 1500 cyls. Don't use the copper ring around the top of the cylinder (by the fins) though. It might hold the head back from sealing correctly to the top of the cylinder. Especially if the head has been flycut. Good luck, Tim

Hiya Steve, Why don't you get a p&c set in 87's and build a 1641. I also have a single port manifold for a zenith or bugspray carb if you like. Ol' john

Steve, everything between the 1500-1600 is a straight swap. One exception is the center top head studs mest be swapped also if you go to DP heads. No big deal. A 1600 DP is a good engine. The factory had it right. I think it kind of tops out there or at 1776. Beyond that the T-4 engine is without a doubt the way to go.
Look at the engine as a balloon. The more you stretch and expand it the thinner and more fragile it becomes. When you want 1800-2000cc of VW engine go with an engine that is stock at 1800-2000. Below that the 1600 DP upright engine is nearly impossible to beat. The exception is in the bus. In that case the 1600 single port is best(more torque).
In th event you want to go with a single a friend of mine has a set of single port manifolds for Kadrons. Good luck. Bob Ingman

BUT, (and it's a really BIG but), if your present 1500 case is an original `68/`69 H5, you should only use it for a low-compression, low-performance, low-displacement singleport - and it'll probably still fail.
If it's a `67 H0, it has some potential in spite of its smaller oil passages; at least it's not cast out of poop like an H5.
