cannot build oil pressure on my new rebuild

Post by troy »

Hello all,

I am nearly at my wits end... my new rebuild 82's x 94mm with engle 110 has been waiting for me to fire it off. i have a test stand with starter that i have used for two other rebuilds. i first turn the engine over without spark plugs to get the oil light to turn off. unfortunately with this rebuild i cannot get the engine to build oil pressure. after several minutes still no oil pressure.

i decided that i should break it down and determine what might cause the trouble... split the case check rods clearance again... ok miked the journals... ok rechecked the oil galleys with compressed air...seemed ok... checked the oil pickup tube...ok changed out oil pump with one that i know was working...put all this back together and tried again... no oil pressure...hooked up both a electical and mechanical oil pressure gauge...no luck no pressure. i have run out of ideas.

any one have any ideas?

thanks for any help you can lend.

If you are full flow, try priming the pump by feeding a pint of oil thru the hose into the pump, and before that, feed a quart into the engine with a plant sprayer or a funnel and elevated hose.
Before a tear down, pull the pump cover and see if it really is turning too.

could the part of the cam that turns the pump have broken off?

No, but the oil pump drive may not be reaching the drive slot in the cam.

Ensure that the oil pump is tightly packed with grease around gears to aid priming process, white grease would work. If it is full flowed check to see if outlet plug in oil pump body is comprimised somehow and leaking.

I second that..... If full flowed make sure the matting area where the plug is has not been ground down. This has happened to me and cause two rebuilds before I found it. To remedy the problem I now plug both the pump and the case.

Not all after market cam gears(some dished slot some flat) and oil pump gears are compatable. See that your gears are in fact turning on the pump.
If so be sure you are using the correct cooler seals. Good luck. Bob Ingman

As an additional note to following pistone and springs are not interchangable front to rear. Good luck. Bob ingman

happened to me once. it was a small piece of debris that blocked the pressure relief valve.
