Sintermetal Bearings

Post by PEPPE »

i've seen these brand of bearings.
they can come up to 4mm ovesize in the case in 0.25mm sizes, up to 1.50mm on crank underside and up to 18mm on thrust size.
I have seen also that the split #2 bearing do not have the iron reinforcement inside.
it is like old 30 HP bearings.
what do you think?
I have used these on variuos mild engines, no problem... BUT that makes me unsure... Peppe

Is this for your "perfect in all places" (except for the crack) high-compression 1915?
If it needs to go 3rd or 4th over (1.5 or 2.0mm) then it really does belong in the scrap barrel anyway, but if you're going to try to weld it up and recycle it again it'll be such a low-quality piece that those main bearings probably won't be the weak point....
Like you've discovered, you can get away with them for a mild engine - I've used them myself for low-budget crap - but an engine built on a 3rd or 4th over case is nothing to be proud of.
Note that the dowel pin holes may not be deep enough (especially on 4th over bearings) - easy/sleazy way is to shorten the dowels a little.

I'm still shuddering from thinking about a 4mm linebore and a .060" under crank....

1914 was at first linebore...

the maximum i have used on friends engines was a 1.5mm linebore, but mostly because i needed a 20mm thrust.
i usually throw away or give as a gift to friends, cranks that do not clear at 0.50mm
i've seen that they simply wear too fast over that

My experience parallels yours - don't go past 1mm linebore or .5mm undersize crank for anything that you expect much life out of. It is possible to use a spacer on the thrust so that you don't have to take a case that's clean at 1mm to 1.5mm. My local VW parts house keeps them around, they're about .024" thick and I believe they may be an oil scraper ring from a motorcycle engine (Harley?).

as a spacer i've used with success a fiat 500 compression ring, it is 70mm on the outside.
do you know how i fix ovalled out dowel pins?
i do on the other side.... just a bit tricky to install but works.
eheheh
