Post by Jadewombat »

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else assembled a 1955(90.5x76) and knows what the output is w/stock carb? Real hp numbers please, not guesstimations. I just want to get an idea. I swear if anyone tells me to go ahead and build a 1914, I'm gonna reach through this computer and beat you with a book of the fundamentals of torque and cooling.

Guesstimation's probably all you're going to get - I can't imagine anyone wasting dyno time with a stock carb on an engine that size. Valve size/headwork, cam & exhaust system selection and compression ratio usually matter too (although probably not much in this case!)

Horsepower would be barely more than stock if you could get it to rev past 3500.
1500RPM torque should be impressive...
I think that's a great bore/stroke combo, but it still needs to breathe!

We have used 75.5 x90.5 engines with all kinds of combo .s . Definatly more power than any 1916 in any direct comparison.
no HP nos for stock carbs but would guess at around 75 BHP at wheels in superbug. But a real stump puller.

An excellent engine selection there.

But with the stock carb you are really going to choke it out. My guess would be 70-75 HP.

Look at the Hot VWs "How to Hot Rod VW Engines part II" (I think that is the title). They have a beefy 1776 and compared running stock carb versus Dells and the results were incredible. I think a 10-15 HP difference. I believe thier engine with duals produced a little over 80 HP.

Again it has been a while since reading that article, but check it out for yourself.

If you know so much, why do you need my opinion BTW, it going to be a dog.( that may even overheat).
I don't know of any idiots that actually built such a combo and made enough money to have it dyno'd. But it's not going to make much more hp then stock. maybe 60-65 hp tops. Stock carb can only flow so much and is the limiting factor on a stock engine.

You might want to trade your fundamental of torque and cooling book in for a BMEP and air intake flow book.

Swing your books at me and I'll knock your teeth out. Build a 1914 with a decent cam and heads, and obviously not a stock carb.

Once again, BUILD A 1914...

Hi,
I have personally built and tested several 74,75,and 75.5 stroke engines, I have found these combos to be far superior to the more common combos such as 78 stroke x90.5, 1916 etc etc.. The std sroke big bore [ie.69x94]is a simple but ordinary engine, and if I was given one I would not fit it to any of my cars. These guys who bat off about 1916cc engines obviously have never experienced a correctly done 75.5/76 x90.5 engine. They are trying to justify the crap 1916 in their own machines.
Please explain why will it only do 3500rpm?
Total crap.We have 40hp fomula Vees they run 6000rpm all day, through a tiny 36hp carb.
If you don't know or you are guessing then don't reply. I have done real testing and have achieved results wich have surpassed my greatest expectations. In fact I spent most of my life making a living from performance VW engines and in this time I have seen many wasted dollars and unhappy people with 94 engines, blow-by, overheating, detonation, lack of power and then finally the three piece case, sometimes 4 piece.
Huge cracks........

Hey Ben, I share your low opinion of 1915s and admit that my 3500 RPM crack was an exaggeration/oversimplification in an effort to make a point - the point being that the 1955 will pump the same CFM at ~3565 RPM that a 1584 will at 4400, the highest RPM that the stock carb was intended for; certainly it can rev higher, but the A/F curve won't extrapolate and jet changes will be needed to compensate, throwing off the mixture at lower RPM.
But your comparison of being able to do 6000 with a 1200cc engine (using a carb designed for a 1200cc engine) to trying to use a carb that was designed for 1600cc on a 1955cc engine is what's "crap" in here.
I knew a guy who grafted a 28PCI onto a 455ci Oldsmobile and it ran, even made it to 70+ MPH (eventually), but the only reason he didn't melt the engine down when running so far off the designed A/F curve of the carb was that there was a steady stream of fuel being sucked through the accelerator pump nozzle at anything over ~1500 RPM. That combination surpassed a lot of people's greatest expectations, but it was still stupid and WRONG!
Like the man said, if you have all the answers already, why come here to ask questions?

Displacement is displacement.

Will 94's out last thick wall 88's or 90.5's. NO. But i can replace them for 200 bucks.

If your on a budget and looking for hp. take the money your spending on a stroker crank and buy some carbs.
