Bob, thanx again for the remote starter tip. It's like you said, "you can't get anything done running back and forth from the cab to the motor". ;^)

Once again, thank you all so very much. If it weren't for you guys, I don't know what I would have done. What a stressful thing to happen on your first fresh motor, in your first VW at that. Man, O' man!

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob,...the spring loaded graphite nub is exactly what I was refering to. It fell out of the cap the last time I took it off. I'm wondering if maybe it was cracked before and adding to or causing the problem or if I broke it puttin on/taking off the cap so many times.

And thanx for the info on the DIY remote starter, I hadn't even thought of doing that. I think I have a push button ignition around here that I never used on my old Ford, I'll try to find it and make one up. Key still needs to be turned on right?

As for the manifolds/intake, everything is tight and seemingly sealed. (I had even put a little red RTV on the metal gaskets)

Sooooo ... I'll make up the remote starter that Bob helped me out with, and go back to the timing approach.

Thank you again Bob for the detailed info.
