I know I need to run my new motor at 2500-3500 RPM's for 15-25 minutes. And also need to set the timing @ 3000 RPM's.
I have no tach, and no money to buy one either. Can any of you give me some ideas of how you might guage RPM's w/ out a tach?
Thanx in advance for any replies!

Breaking in that new motor, eh? Spent all your money on new motor parts, eh?
I don't think it's that imperative that you get the motor RIGHT at 2500 RPMS to break in. The point is to get the motor to mid throttle and leave it there, to break in and harden the cam, etc. Just put it at mid throttle, and leave it there. You should be able to tell by ear and get it pretty close. As far as timing, you can set it statically to start, and then when you bring the motor up to about mid throttle to break in, bring your dizzy to about 30 degrees, if you have an 009 distributor and a light. I don't watch my tach when setting the timing, I just set turn the dizzy till I get about 30 degrees TOTAL advance, and I probably bring the motor up to 3500 RPMS. I've had no problems.
Some people prefer two 10 minute stints, shutting the motor down halfway between break-in. I broke my 2180 in this year for a full 20 minutes, at 3000 RPMS. It is a very scary time. Have your kitty litter handy, and the fire extinguisher close. Pray a lot.

why not go buy a cheap dwell meter/tach I think you could pick one up for 20 bux or so, maybe 30. Could you borrow a dwell meter from someone?
I dont think its imperative that you a specific RPM number you want it high enough so that the oil pump will be putting out a good flow.

1" (really 3/4") block of wood between the throttle works perfect for me. Seems to be 3000RPM by ear... I have a good feel for these things, honest. The last two motors I have timed by ear and then put the timing light on it, perfect (no kidding, shocked myself).

It's like I said guys, I have NO money for a tach. It's not that I don't want to spend the money on a Tach. If I had money I would get a good one, my bus is going to be fully guaged (tach, temp, etc) eventually. But for the time being, I don't even have money for LUNCH (or anymore gas at that).

Bob & Adrian:
Thank you both for your reply. You both confirmed what I was thinking. I didn't want to go w/ my own logic on it though, not knowing if I was going to break it, as opposed to break it in. Anyway I just got home from my new job, and yes I'm gettin' ready to break in that new motor! A 3/4 in. block of wood huh, ... gotta' love it! I'll have to try that! ;^)
When I get it broken in and runnin' smooth, I'll drive up to my fathers house and use his timing light to set the timing correctly.
Thanx again fellas', this BB has been a BIG help to me.
