Neither of my Type I books have the specifications for the thrust measurement on the #1 main saddle in the case. What's the standard dimension? Thanks

I've never seen this arrangement before. Look at the pics. There is a shim that has been placed in the shoulder area of the thrust bearing. Pic 1 shows it separated. Pic 2 shows it installed on the bearing. It was located between the bearing and the saddle on the shoulder closer to the flywheel. Anyone seen this done before? Looks pretty cheesy to me.

Looks like an innovative attempt to avoid buying the proper bearing. Standard thrust width is 0.865". First (+1) size is 0.825" and second (+2) is 0.786". Recommended practice is to cut the saddle just enough to clean up, then get the next size thrust that won't fit on and trim the bearing to size on a lathe. Done carefully this gives a tighter fit and allows longer case life.

The thrust-shim works pretty well, actually. It's about .024" thick (a Harley oil ring, I believe) and allows you to salvage a case that's already had a 1.0mm thrust cut without having to resort to going to .060" over linebore in order to get a 2.0mm oversize thrust bearing. For this one scenario, anyway, it's the lesser of two evils. I've seen a lot of them done this way and haven't ever seen a failure. In fact, the .040" over case in my son's car has a +1 thrust and TWO of these spacers (not much case left between the thrust surface and the dowel pin!), and the endplay is still fine after 20 years of service.
Ever see an old VW factory exchange engine with brass thrust spacers dowelled into the case?

Nope, have not. Interesting information Marc. Thanks.

The case has had two thrust cuts that I know of, as these are since I had it. It was a 2007cc (78x90.5) and ran great, but this thrust issue turned up again for a second time and pissed me off so I pulled the motor and split it to find this. I measured about 0.017" thrust before I pulled the motor. I decided some time before I acutally pulled it to get a new case and start over with my BPP 84mm crank, h-beams, and 94mm p&c's. I've been collecting parts for a while now. I still need some stuff, but I am getting close. As soon as RIMCO gets my new case back to me (sad story getting the case, but its coming), I will start selling off my old parts. I have the following I am going to sell. Everything but the case has lass then 5K miles on it.

* engine case (.040 ost with 0.816 thrust shoulder) - otherwise in great shape!

* BugPack 78mm forged crank - perfect condition

* 90.5mm p&c's - very good condition, barely any carbon at all

* Mexican 043 big valve heads (14mm deep spark threads, extra meat on the intakes

* Engle 110 cam with lifters, all marked for proper re-orientation

* Stock rods, clearanced

* Bugpack filter pump

* Heater boxes

* 1.1 stock rockers with BugPack solid shafts

Various other little parts as well, so if you are interested watch for me to post notice of these parts for sale.

Thanks!

Northwest Connecting Rod is probably closer to your stomping grounds these days - Jerry should be able to hook you up too.

Ah yes, the thrust cut with a shim. I believe that was a favorite of the Bow-Wow machine shop from 79-86 or later. It was a great way to save a case. How do I know? I was the machinist at the Everett store during that time. I wish I could find a pile of those shims again. Anybody know a source? Tim
