Alternator

Post by yesaghia »

I have a 74 Ghia with an alternator. There is a small electrical box that is mounted on the left rear wheel hump in the engine compartment. Is that a voltage regulator? Or does my alternator have an internal regulator?

Internal-regulator alternators have only two terminals on them, the large threaded B+ post and the push-on for D+ that goes to the warning light.
If yours requires an external regulator, it'll have the post plus three push-ons (D+, DF, D-).

I have a 74 coupe and you definitely have an external voltage regulator. But Bosch doesn't make those any longer. All their alternators come with internal regulators. You might want to get an extra external regulator and carry it with you for an emergency. That's what I did.
