Just stick with the porsche 5 speed. Its been proven to work and hey it fits pretty nicely in a bug. You could try to look at newer acura fwd trannies, they are transaxle just like vw. subaru is an option, dont know if they have a 6 speed. other than that I cant think of too many 6 speeds that can be easily put on a vw.

I dunno about the Subaru option. You'd either need to flip the tranny upside down to allow it to turn the right rotation, or flip the ring gear which I don't think is possible (somebody correct me if I am wrong).
Subaru does make a 6-speed with their latest WRX vehicles (maybe it's the STi version due sometime this year), but one issue is that pretty much everything from '95 until now is 4wd, which means you'll have to modify the central diff to get power only to the transaxle.
'94 and earlier Legacy's were availble in 2wd, as were some early Impreza's...again, considering you either flip the ring gear or run the tranny upside down. You would then need an adapter to mate the VW engine to the transaxle...I imagine KEP could fab something if their Sub engine to VW tranaxle adapter didn't work.

No, more gears are needed to counteract a lack of toqure. Engines with narrow powerbands need more gears. An F1 engine is a perfect example. Hardley any torque but almost 900hp......and at 7 speeds.Shadowbug wrote:more gears are only needed to counteract a lack of power
if you have gobs of power (as in 300+ hp) you'll only need 2 gears, one for acceleration and one for top speed.

What you need is a G50-21 porsche box from a 993 porsche, it has 6 gears will handle 800bhp.
its the next thin on my list for my "monster floorpan" to compliment my 996 rear suspention setup!!
more gears are only needed to counteract a lack of power
I have 259ftlb of touqe and trust me 4 gears are not enought
COUNT first,second,third,forth,100mph! thats how fast they go!! i need 6 gears badly!
