Do I need to paint bare metal?

Post by VWShaneHill »

I'm in the process of prepping my beetle for paint. I had to strip the decklid to bare metal because it was in such poor condition. The paint on the body still has good adhesion, do I need to strip it to bare metal or just sand the entire surface with 80 grit and a D/A sander before primer?

I wouldnt paint over old paint if u paid me....to me thats sleeze....u just dont no whats hiding under that stuff....

I like to keep the outside the same color as the inside or else every speck of the old color will be wiped off the car.......i hate when u take off door panels and see 3 different colors..painted door hardware and such......just more sleeze......

It takes like 2 or 3 days to strip a bug completly with some chemical stripper and razor scraper..sanding discs..wire wheels..picks and whatever.....

unless u have unlimited cash flow which most people on here dont u can get it blasted.......or u can make your own pressure blaster which i did.....but ull need some cash for that....

Now, with that being said, the answer is no, you don't have to. However, I hesitate to paint over paint for the simple reason that you just don't know what's under there.

I just bought a new fender and it's covered in black paint. Is this primer? or should I remove it before I prime? Thanks,

John...if it's new its primer or more percise under coat you should scuff and prime all new parts lots of people don't and get away with it but factory recomends you scuff and prime. You dont need to dump it on as your panel will be fairly smooth after sanding it with say a 360 to 600 grit paper all you are doing is putting a few thin coats over it, more to seal it from your paint so to speak.
