front and rear clip on a 1956 OVAL ragtop

i need to replace both front and rear clip and was wondering the best method...overlap with flange or buttweld. a guy told me its best to overlap.the rear was replaced at sometime and it looks as though they overlaped and buttwelded too but it is rusting out pretty good so i wanna redo it correctly so any help and tips or websites on this would be great.thnx guys
