Bonnet and Engine Cover seals - oh and the fuel cover releas

The rubber seals for the bonnet and engine cover on my 1970 type 1 are held in place by a metal strip with a roll profile that is spot welded to the bodywork. This is rusty and missing in places - is it possible to buy a replacement strip and spot it in place or is there another way to hold the rubber in place e.g. with some type of glue? Is glue better as it does away with the rust trap?
Oh and another thing - I just bought a mail order replacement cable for releasing the fuel filler cover, the old one has a plastic handle but the new on has just a soldered nipple. I can't see any obvious way to take the plastic handle off of the old cable - anyone know the trick?

if you aren't going orig. remove the pinch welds, smooth and paint. Instead of the orig rubber seal, use newer mexican rubber. It seals to the under side of the front and rear lids. Just a thought

The handle is a separate item (it is available, I just bought one). The handle just unscrews from the cable). Cheers!
