stick vs mig

Post by moebius3 »

A friend of mine told me that a friend of his says that.........stick welders should be used when youre welding something that is load bearing and mig/flux works better when your welding in body panels and things of that nature......I just bought a mig/flux setup and i want to weld some sculpture type projects..most likely rebar and various scrap from the local scrap yard.I am worried about my welds not being able to support whatever i might make....any input would be appreciated...thanks

Either will work fine if done properly. If you have the extra $$$ go with true MIG (gas bottle and C25 for carbon steel) instead of the flux core wire.

Dunno if it is the swap in polarity or what from one config to the other but the flux core seems to spatter a lot more and tends to blow holes in sheet more quickly if you are not careful.

Art pix are always welcome too :) I'm a visual kinda guy ...

I don't disagree w/ what your friends friend said. Stik welding is for heavier/thicker metals, which structural members usually are. But a thick enough flux-core wire will get you similar results. Several passes should be more than strong enough for anything you could balance.
