Exhaust too big?

Post by Spooger »

Is it possible to go too big on an exhaust system?

I am looking at a 1776 with stock heads and engle 100 cam.

I will be building a fairly loaded 2275 later and have the exhaust system already for that one. It is a 1 7/8 merged header. Would it be bad to use that exhaust on the 1776 for the time being?

What is the drawback of going oversized on the exhaust?

Thanks...

An oversize exhaust will cost you low end torque. A 1776 with a W100 cam and stock heads should be using either a 1 3/8" or 1 1/2" header, depending on carburetion.

it wouldn't feel all that great, but if you have that header already and are going to build another motor soon, just run it! it'll make the next motor seem that much faster!

roachghia was being a little sarcastic: A severely oversized exhaust (Sorry if you're american; but that exhaust woud be oversized for anything but a dedicated strip machine) like that would be worse than a stocker for your current engine. If you're lucky, it might produce a peak or two on the dyno, but that would make it that much harder to cope with on the street.

Weld a couple of bits of pipe onto the outlets of your stock muffler if you don't have a sensible set of extractors lying about (or, if you are american and have a bit of sense, buy a set of bugpak or empi extractors and sell 'em cheap when your done with 'em.)
