82mm Stroker

Post by bpcatdog »

Can a type 4 engine be built around an 82mm stroker with chevy rod journals? Example: 101 x 82 (2628cc)? Would a fifth head stud be needed to securely seal the cylinder to the head? Just wondering!

Absolutely....... It damn sure ain't easy!

five and six studding is just a band aid to HELP an illness of poor parts and improper expansion with the engine...

any bore over 96 requires Nickies (if you ask me) and thats the only way I build the big boys....

Going to anything beyond a 78 stroke complicates things tremendously. Going with anything beyond an 80 stroke complicates things to the point that you better be patient.... Going to an 82 stroke complicates things so badly that most of them never get finished....

Anything more than that and your just insane, or kin to me and like to make things fit!

The key is efficiency! The bigger it is the harder it is to make efficient!

So about the most efficient way an engine anyone can build, that is proven, and without having to use nickies, is a 2270 (96 x 78.4).

Now would the 1.7L Q heads be better for the bigger displacement engine because of the way the head bolt pattern is or is it the same as using the 1.8/2.0 L heads?

The 2270 is without a doubt, without any hesitation the strongest, best TIV engine on the planet that doesn't need Nickies!

What all needs clearancing with a 78mm stroke?
I think I read somewhere that with the use of I beams you don't have to clearance the case, just the cylinder bases, is this correct?

I beams are the worst rod for this. The clearance is worse!

You need a reduced base circle cam, clearanced H beam rods, and slight case clearance.

Or a 100% drop in kit from me that simply falls in place.

True, true...

So Jake, I've got lots of parts from my core 914 1.8, and want to build a 2270, so if I bought an engine kit from you, would any of the cost be taken off for a core exchange (the parts are in excellent shape)?

The kit does have some core charges.. Unfortunately the 1.7/1.8 cranks and rods are a dime a dozen..

It's my understanding that the CB Super Race Rods (part # 1289?) are pretty much already clearanced (rod caps) enough to just drop in. Will these rods work?

I know you mentioned Jake that there was a set of rods that the caps had to be clearanced too much which made them weak but I don't remember was make you stated they were.

even CB rods need clearance. All rods need clearance.

Some are REALLY bad, especially SCAT.

The profile of the rod clearancing is the key, it can make it strong, or weak.

No, the kits are just like an engine- every one is different, and the prices follow suite....

Where's my IRS refund????? I want my 2270 for my 1990ish Mexico Bettle!!!

Jake, I know I'll need to cut the heads (1.7L Q) for the bigger bore and the oversized valves (42 x 36), but I was wondering, do you sell the heads outright or are they strictly for your engine kits?

I do not sell heads... It takes all we can just to keep our kits and engines supplied with heads. The heads are a big undertaking with any engine we "kit" or assemble.

You could have Len do the heads no sweat and buy the kit from me. He and I will work together to get the combo perfect for ya.
