I'm familar with what lift and duration is, but I'm trying to figure out what the benefits of each are. Specifically what lift and duration do to the power and development of horsepower in an aircooled engine.
Can anyone break it down for me with examples of gains/losses from more lift, and then gains/losses of more duration?
Is there a "magic" combination of lift and duration?
What are some things one may want to avoid when increasing lift and duration?

Increasing duration will effect the operating range of the engine. High duration cams will see power in the upper RPM range. Lift will determine the maximum torque the cam will develop in that powerban. Lobe centeline angle is another consideration. Narrow seperations like 106 and 108 degrees will develop a high torque peak. Angles like 112 degrees will create more of a flat and broad torque curve spread out more on the RPM band.
