Help! Engine cuts out at speed?!?

Hello all,

I just did a top end rebuild of a 1500sp that I converted to a 1600 sp
At 70 mph the car starts surging cutting in and out I pull over and let it die. Oil temp is around 180F per my guage oil sending unit in the sump plate. Gas tank half full full filter has gas in it and the gas looks clean
Checked plugs boot firmly attached to all plugs. No ovious burnt or cut wires. from the coil, distributor or carb. I let it sit for a few minutes and restarted it idled fine and entered traffic and back home so my only guess could it be the fuel pump going it is a funny looking one has bolts all around the top where the one from my other motor is smooth and sealed without bolts

It could be a number of things.. but the thing that comes first to mind is the fuel system isn't keeping up. This could be fuel pump, fuel lines, clogged (or partially clogged) fuel filter, lines etc. I have even seen fuel tanks stop up and cause this. I had to change the tank before on account of this. The car would completely "die" but would usually start back after a while. You could also have ignition probs, especially if you have an electronic ignition.. Sometimes fuel and ignition mimic each other so that it is hard to tell which system is giving you the problems..

Hey Henry,

Yeah I'm thinking it's the fuel pump not keeping up I had a simular problem one time before with an old fuel pump I just wanted to cross check with some experenced folks ok sounds like I have a few other things to check as well I have a almost new pump on my bench now I'll install and doa free way test and see if the issue cpomes back.

Let us know how it goes... Some tanks have a screen in the bottom that you can remove (I think) and clean. Man, I had one drive me nuts, until I changed the tank.. just something to keep in mind if all else fails..

Ok did the big freeway test 70mph no problem. I removed the old pump last night the spring was pretty bad. I noticed the difference right away once I put the new one on. So far so good I'll drive and see thanks for you help.
