Go check out http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum
goto the tech section and look for the post titled EJ20. I did up some size comparison diagrams comparing a type 1 1300 with the WRX motor (idea stolen from Wes..check out his sight at http://www.offroadvw.net/ ) its a lot bigger in places...like the sump
oh well such is the price of 250+ hp

The EJ20T engine fits into TIII nicely, VERY tight in a Bug and is too small, torque wise for a bus....The EJ22 or 25 is a better bet....Or you could do what I'm doing (if you have a bus) EG33! Same HP & more torque as the EJ20T , but with out the turbo hassles!....Check out my website for more on the EJ20T....My brother has one in his Notch!

The problem with the turbo engine is that it isn't just the sump that is the lowest point. So is the exhaust manifold and the oil filter. Fitting a shortened sump is only part of the solution, one which I wouldn't do with a turbo engine!
This engine has been fitted to beetles before and will fit under a stock engine lid (good pic on thesamba.
See my site for more details of my swap...

The problem with the suby motor has nothing to do with the exhaust after the turbo, stock the exhaust didn't go under the car anyway (and who uses a cat anyways?
). The problem is with the exhaust manifold before the turbo. That does sit fairly low, but with the heat sheilds taken off the sump is still a couple of inches lower (at least with the legacy turbo, not sure about wrx).

Sumps
www.customoffroad.com.au do a shortened sump kit for the EJ engines. It takes it up 85mm so it is like 20mm lower than the stock VW Sump. They are done at $440 on an exchange basis of $550 outright. They include a modified pickup, all bolts, sealant, tool and fitting instructions.
