Too vague of a question.

The Three Types say 36hp-40hp-13/15/1600
36hp-Cast Generator Stand small 6v
40hp-6mm oil pump studs, single relief, small oil pickup
1300&above-8mm oil pump studs, dual relief, unless it is early (hard to tell from 40hp series)

The Three Types say Type-1, Type-2, Type-3
Type-1 -No Rear Hanger, no external oil filler
Type-2 -Exactly the same as Type-1 (pre'67) or rear hanger (68-71)
Type-3 -No oil pressure sender hole, no dipstick, external oil filler hole

But a case with a dipstick & rear hanger & Type-3 filler makes it an universal so it fits all.

The Three Types say Mag, Alu, Type-4
Mag- Die Cast very smooth, burns well in a fire
Alu ? Sand Cast much rougher
T-4 Die Cast Alu takes 411-914 internals, way too much work to make into a 1776

The Three Types say German, Mexican, Brazil
German ? rare in ?not worn out? condition
Mexican - not as good as later german, good tooling watch for seconds
Brazil ? only ?new? anymore random fit and finish

This could fun trying to make lists, but seriously what are you trying to do?

sorry about being vague. Im getting a type 1 long block, and i was looking for a way to spot what type of case it was.

How do you tell if it is dual relief??
also, is dual relief best for upgraded engines?? Thanks- Justin D

Start by posting the engine number. The letter(s) at the front tell a lot.
Best way to tell if a case has dual relief valves is to look and see if it has...how do I put this?....two.
Seriously, if you look at the bottom of the case you'll find a slotted plug about an inch in diameter at the oil pump end - all cases have that. If there's another one at the flywheel end => dual-relief :D

Don't get hung up on the phrase ?dual-relief? all it really means is that the case has large oil galleys and two oil pressure control springs.

I am not a sales weasel, but I am thinking two things;
  • Unless this is a really old case it is going to be a dual relief. The last single relief case I saw new was a ?panzer out of brazil? and I though it was a great foundation for a big motor
The alloy, machining, the assembly are far more important than the design of the relief valve(s)
But if you plan on doing any work at all, but a good manual like a Bentley or even that Muir one. They all have a picture of a oil pressure control cap & spring & plunger.

Part #24 to 27 are the primary oil pressure control and are found right above.

Part #19 to 22 (if required) are on the same side of the case split but only an inch or two away from the flywheel
