Thats one sharp conversion, do you have any "in work" pics? What kind of radiator did you use? Is the rear seat removed to fit the conversion? I would love to see what you had to do to squeeze it in. Give us more info please.

From the outside & the inside of the car no-one would know what I have done. That was one of my main objectives form the start, the other was to have it extremely quiet. After having twin carbies for the last 10 years, especially on my last air cooled vw motor (2275cc) noise was a main issue as this is my daily driver. It is now so quiet inside that I sometimes have to check the guages that the motor is still running! It's fantstic. Even at 80mph on the Freeway u can still have a conversation & hear the stereo perfectly. It's great. & the power................................. As u can see from the pics that I have attached, the rear apron is removable & it takes about 30 minutes for me to remove the engine, The rear seat hasn't been touched, the intercooler has been boxed in from inside & there is a board over the top with speakers in it just as before, u can't see anything. The radiator is from a Holden Camira & is a sealed unit with fans top & bottom independently switched from switches on the dash. I did this so that I could experiment with which fan setup works best. So far, the fans just aren't needed at all, even when sitting in traffic or taking it out to 110mph on the freeway, with 16 litres of coolant (the standard wrx takes 6.5 litres) id just can't get hot.
So now I'm going to take the bottom fan off the radiator & put my small radiator that I have for the intercooler up the front under the main radiator, this will also let me install a oil cooler where the radiator for the intercooler now resides, beside the gearbox.
I won't get on the track until march so I have lots of time to change a few things now that it's up & running. All in all though, it has surpassed my expectations.
Anyone thinking about doing the conversion, dont' think about it, just do it!

Jak

Do you have any pictures of the intercooler setup? Is this something you made yourself, or something bought? I was thinking about making an air to water mounted similar to how you described using a modified dsm side mount (weld tanks for water over where air flows), bike radiator, and electric pump. I'm definatly interested to see what others have done. Thanks

Theres a much easier way than that, I just used the Liberty water to air intercooler, it bolts straight onto the wrx engine, even using the same blow off valve! there are no modifications at all to use the Subaru water to air.

Did you get the intercooler from a junked car, or buy it from the dealership. The reaon I was thinking about making it myself is I can get everything other than the pump for next to nothing. I don't mind the work (that part is free).

I got the intercooler, all the piping, blow off valve, water pump & radiator all for $200. Bargain!
The other upshot is that I know it all works as it's all Subaru.
It's what I would reccomend doing.

Hi Jak,

Long time no speak!!
Just curious to see how the handling is with the weight of the new engine, radiator, coolant etc....compared to what you had
So what does this thing do 0-100k's ??

Cheers

Good job Jak!

Do you have any pics of what you did with the coolant tube routing, exhaust, and sump?

Thanks fo helping lead the way!

Hi Dino!
The handling so far seems to be fine, although I won't get onto the track until the 20th of March, I have 26mm torsion bars in the rear, an inch x 2 inch rear subframe supporting the motor & I have moved the motor & gearbox forward 2 inches. It feels really nice & stiff with the extra weight. I actually beleive that the car handles a little better now with the extra weight, it expanded from 920kg to 980kg with the conversion.
The main thing that I have been trying to get used to is when the boost comes on & throttle position etc, u really have to "drive" the car fast around corners now, when u get it right, the slingshot out of corners with the boost is simply amazing!

As for some pics, my computer crashed some time ago & I lost every pic that I had on the build up. If u do a search on Samba using Jak Rizzo as the author & leave all the other options blank, u may find what u are looking for. I have left the sump stock for now, with the 26mm torsion bars & 17 inch wheels, it doesn't touch the ground anymore, I just welded a 5mm sump guard to the bottom of it to be safe. I don't think that the sumps that have been developed yet are good enough to do cuircut racing, especially with oil surge a problem.

Thanks Jak, the search got me close. I'd like to see someones exhaust routing for one of these conversions in the future though.

Which year vehicles had the water-air chargecooler set-up? I don't believe we got those here in the USA though. At least I've never seen any Scoobys with one.

How much clearance underneath do you have compared to a standard VW engine, or one that has the extra sump attached?

This is a picture of my exhaust so far. It obviously is only tacked together and missing the second half (I figured it would give you an idea of what it will look like). The missing half wraps under the axle and goes straight back to an eldelbrock rpm series muffler. I need to complete that section and bring it up to school so I can finish off the welds (TIG). I can post some pictures when completed it you would like.

I don't believe that we got any air to water intercooled Subarus in the US (someone correct me if I'm wrong.... I have never seen one). There are other cars that came with air to waters stock, such as a 4th gen Toyota Celica all trac (awd, turbo). That is one thing I'm corrently working on now as my motor is non-intercooled from the factory (legacy turbo).

The exhaust was actually one of the easiest things to do, so don't be to worried about it, I'll get some pics to u soon.

Tha intercooler came off a Subaru Forester, one of the very first that had water to air intercoolers, thats why mine is Silver & not black, the early liberties also had them up until about 93 I think, u should be able to get one no worries.

My ground clearance ended up being similar to what I had with my 2275cc, as with that I had a anti-surge sump bolted to that & it was quite low, I drive my car daily & I never touched that sump once in the 6 years that I had it on the motor, so I'm not expecting too much trouble from the wrx sump.
