8 dowel crank/ 4 dowel fly wheel

I bought an 8 dowel crank and a 4 dowel lightened flywheel, by mistake. Is it ok just to drill the fly wheel to accept the addition 4 dowels?

As long as you have the correct fixture that matches the crank pattern.
Is that flywheel cast?
Most aftermarket new lightened 4 dowel flywheels are.
I wouldn't use it personally if it was.

Ideally the crank & flywheel should always be 8-dowelled together.

If both are done independently to the "standard" SPG pattern they should still bolt up; a good machinist can make up some transfer points to put in the dowel pin holes and drill a flywheel to match an already-8-dowelled crank, too...you just may not get as much strength out of either compared to a precision job done Berg's way.

A bit worried about using the flywheel as it is cast, what are the down sides of this? strength etc... Is it ok to use or am I tempting fate?

If it's stock or close, don't worry about it. If you are gonna be turning some real RPMs or putting out a lot of torque, do forged.
