I just pruchased a garret t3 turbo at e-bay. I would like to know where I can find good information for the common layperson that can guide me through the assembly process of a ground pounding turbo engine?

you can try these places.
1) volks authority in san jose, ca.
408-286-7306 / www.vw-auth.pacbell.net talk to ray or gary. they can give you information you need for a turbo motor.
2) cb performance in farmersville, ca.
559-733-8222/www.cbperformance.com ask for the tech dept.
3) car craft inc. in riverside, ca.
909-781-4480 / www.carcraftinc.com
ask for jason he is the vw turbo guy there.
4) fischer engineering II in phoenix, az
602-967-2477
other things to consider:
is motor aircooled or watercooled?, and is your turbo shaft seals for a blow through or pull through application?
what kind of turbo system you want to go with
pull through or a blow through system, single sidedraft carb, single or dual down draft systems? or go for broke with a EFI/turbo setup. And don't forget about your trans.
you need a good solid trans to hold that motor, or you will be pushing/towing your vehicle home.
The choice is yours on how much $$ you want to put into this.
the internet and the vw show swap meets are places to find some good used turbo systems and save some money ,like the turbo you got on e-bay. Hope this info. helps you on your quest for a ground pounding turbo engine.
Good Luck on your choice and see you on streets.
Turbo Joe.

Thanks Joe. I am building a type 4 motor. I am new to turbo chargers so I have nothing set in stone yet. I am planning at the moment to build a simple setup to learn from. The turbo I bought can be used as a pull thru or blow thru, I am planning on a blow thru. I will be buying bottom end parts from aircooled soon for a second motor which will become the primary motor when the time comes. I think I can use my weber 44's with some modifications in a downdraft mode. I am curious about tube sizes for the intake and exhaust.

robert, you could have a problem with building a type 4 turbo motor. Most guys build type I turbo motors here in the United
States. The problem would be parts, like intake manifold (length),(header design) a setup using type 4 heads, etc. You may also have to get one custom-built. May have pull out some extra dollars.
The shops I mention may have encountered this before, and could direct you in the right direction. Or you could try:
1) Bernie Bergmann in Escondido,CA
760-747-4649 www.bergmannvw.com
I have seen his adds in the mags in the past, but I don't remember seeing anything on type 4 turbo bolt on kits. only type I. Maybe he has them but did not advetise them. Wouldn't hurt to call and ask.
2) Fat Performance in Orange,CA
714-637-2889
I seen guys from the UK on this forum using a blower type system with a Porsche 911 fan style kit on a type 4 motor and still have their hood/decklid on. I think it is a popular set up in the UK.
Good Luck on your search!!

I thought about that. I'm sure I can get some information from some pioneer somewhere. It sounds like a good challenge. If I have to build every component from scratch then I'll do it.

Hi
If your going to use EFI just get an appropriate inlet manifold from a bus or 914. As far as an exhaust goes buy some 1.5 inch mandrell bent bends and start welding. The collector is about the hardest part to make. Find a turbo guy that can check the specs on your turbo to make sure its setup properly.
Mount the turbo temporaly on a sturdy bracket in the position you want it, it saves lots of time and sore arms holding it in position.

Hi
With Haltec etc you supply the injectors. They are usually production car ones so get the correct seals and flange dimensions from the donour car. I think most Bosch injectors use common dimensions.
