Hi
I was looking through a VDO catalogue the other day and noticed that they had an electric oil pump listed, this would be perfect if you needed to mount your turbo really low and still get the oil to return to the sump.

Electric oil pump
Hi Steve:
I'm thinking that if you have a turbo mounted really low so that the oil has to go "uphill" to get back into the sump any pump arrangement needs to be a scavenge style so it'll really "suck" the oil out of the turbo bearing pack. Any oil left in this area is going to cook after turning off the engine. Then it turns to carbon and plugs up the oil passage. You'd probably need a system of check valves too so you prevent oil from running downhill back into the turbo after you shut it off.

Electric oil pump
Hi Dave
Good points, I just memtioned it in case it would help someone with a difficult setup. I think some Porsches use a simlar system.

Electric oil pump
Hi, I built my turbo system to run a scavenge pump to return the oil back to the crankcase and used a Mocal electric oil pump that was designed specifically for this application. I worked for a couple of weeks but has now become seriously troublesome. The suction valve keeps not sealing thus causing oil to back-up in the bearings. I've dismantled the pump and rebuilt it four times and it is of crappy quality inside. I have since junked the pump and am running a modified holley with no probs. If you are looking for a pump, avoid the Mocal at all costs; it's a piece of seriously overpriced crap ($250).
