type 4 draw through turbo

Post by Skinny »

well all out there I can say that you can build your own turbo set up for a type 4 draw through system. I know this because it's hanging off the back of my car (Baja) it is an upright type 4. I have had this motor since 1991 it was fresh rebuild with a custom ground cam and heavey valve springs other that that it is stock. the only major repair I did was a ring job 2 years ago (it needs it again) it has never droped a thing. I take this mototr over 5000rpm and have had it make 15lbs boost lots of times my problem is that anything over 10lbs and I start to loose oil that is the only problem I also think it is under carbed and can't get enough air

I am building a turbo type4 sandrail. Do you have any pictures of your setup? What kind of turbo do you have?

type 4 draw through turbo

Post by ravenshurst »

I am putting a type IV in my '66 bug, and would LUUUVVVV to have a turbo. Unfortunately, I know very little about turbos.....what internal engine mods have you made? I am thinking about a draw through and webers, because I have read here in the forum that although it doesn't make as much power as blow through/EFI/EMS, it is a lot simpler to set up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I just re-read the post. What grind of cam are you using? And do you recommend porting & polishing the heads?

The truth be known you d not need to port and polish the heads yes it will give you better flow but when you are forceing air in to the engine (BOOST) the really don't care if the ports are smooth or not for the cost of getting them done right you are better off spending your cash someplace else. It's hard to find places that really know how to port and polish. I have a friend with a flow bench and I have seen a lot of cash spent on jobs that probably made engines run worse.

What kind of carb are you running? I have all the stuff to turbo except for that. I have access to some Holley's, but that just doesn't seem the way to go for daily driving.
