HI,I'M NEW TO THE FORUM AND I THINK ITS GREAT,VERY INFORMATIVE,BUT I HAVEN'T FOUND ANYONE WITH MY PROBLEM.I HAVE A STOCK 1600 DUAL PORT ON A 73 SB.I MADE A TURBO SET UP FOR IT,IT'S AN 87 MITSUBISHI STARION TURBO,32-36 DUAL PROGRESSIVE WEBBER AN I MADE THE HEADER MYSELF.EVERITHING ELSE IS STOCK.THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE ENGINE DOESN'T WANT TO GO OVER 4500 RPM,BEFORE IT DID.THE OTHER THING IS THE BOOST GAUGE IS CONNECTED TO THE MANIFOLD.BUT DOESNOT REGISTER ANY BOOST.SHOULD I PUT IT SOMEWHERE ELSE?

It is likely that your tach is reading high as a stock ,repeat stock engine is going to be nosing over big time after 4000 it was designed that way to avoid the poor thing beating itself to death. If you add a turbo and stock springs the springs just may be tired and act as a rev limiter i.e. not a very cost effective one as the engine is telling you to slow down and think what you are doing...Beating the poor thing to death, the Rajay kits sold in the early 60's used stock components to limit RPM and boost, even a small increase to say 75 hp or so calls for some modifications if you want the engine to last a few weeks or longer....8 dowell, CW crank are 2 biggies that you should take a long hard look at....

*Dual* progressives? Got any pics?

You'll need to provide more info on your engine, particularly the "before & after" part. What do you mean the engine won't go over 4500 RPMs? Do you mean it doesn't have any balls or simply will not spin any faster? Check your dizzy to see of you've got any shorts-to-ground that might be caused by the advance mechanism contacting the outer casing of your dizzy.

Is your boost gauge connected to your intake manifold above or below your throttleplates?

Dizzy= distributor 24 degrees total advance
all the time. Oil should be from the pressure side most likely from the sensor area.
What jets are you using in the 2 barrel?
Run about 7-10 lbs of boost to be safe.

TURBO PROBLEMS

Post by Steve C »

Hi

I had a problem when I got my turbo bug running. I didnt have a enough preload on the wastegate rod, you need about 1/2 to a full hole, so you have to pull on the rod to get it into the hole. I was only making boost when I reved the motor hard, now it makes boost from about 1500 rpm and comes on at 5 psi at 3000 rpm. If you not making boost a turbo is like big restrictor in the exhaust pipe. You should measure the boost after the throttle butterfly. Oh by the way, just hit that key next to your "a" button once.
