shift rod hole, is this big enough

I'm currently customizing my car and I've welded up about half of the shift rod hole in the front apron of a 73 beetle and wanted to know if this is big enough for the rod to pass through. I've never taken the shoft rod out before? Thanks!

I havent done it myself but I would assume that you need some room to wiggle it out. Try posting this in the transaxle forum, plenty of guys in there have removed a shift rod. Theres a small bushing that sometimes goes bad.
