Best place for Oil temp sensor?

Post by KJH »

Hi all,

I want to fit a oil temperature sensor on the DTM converted engine. Where is the best place? Do I tap a M10x1 thread in the sump plate, or maybe make an inline boss to sit in the oil cooler feed - or CSP sell an adapter that replaces the relief valve cover with a tapped cover for M10x1.

Any thoughts please?

and Happy New Year all!

mine is in my deep sump.
It's what you learn after you know every thing that counts.

Mines in the line after the oil cooler, Gives me an accurate reading of what temperature oil the engine will be seeing.

Sam,

Where did you get the adapter from that you put inline?? Might be the easiest option for me!

Made it on the lathe at home.

A picture of the fitting, and a very similar lump that shows what it started life as. Turned the ends down and gave them the barb like effect, drilled and tapped the middle of it to suit the sump sender I had, made sure there was plenty of room around the senders tip for oil to flow (very little restriction) and drilled/tapped it for an earth.

If you do make one, remember that it MUST have an earth running to it, otherwise the signal could (probably will) be incorrect.

I've been looking into this problem myself recently (but for a type 1 application). From what I have read on here (I tend to read more than I post  ), Inline is a good solution like Samcats excellent handy work. But only if you want to view a 'change' in tempreture. If you want to know the exact tempreture (which many people comment is difficult with vdo style guages), then you really need to know the maximum tempreture that the oil reaches, as this is the point where most oil degredation will happen. I'm not sure what the best solution is in this 'high-temp' case though.

Good luck! Will be reading avidily!

Sam,

Thanks for the advice.

As for temperature - well the oil sump sender I had on the old T1 engine was a poor reading, and was difficult to read on the VDO guage - and you are right about it being an indication of maximum temperature.

Probably make something in-line with the cooler for a more realistic reading.

Thanks all.

I went through this one myself. The Type 1 Oil Pressure Relief Valve cover is M14x1.5 thread but the type 4 one isn't. I think it's bigger. The Sump plug (where I've currently got my sender) is - I think - M12x1.5 thread. On 914s the sump plate is different. I think the boys on here call it a Taco? but basically it is tapped for a sender and shaped so the sender sits at an angle rather than downwards. That's probably the way I'm gonna go at some point.

PS Nice machining Sam. There's a market for those....
