I have a kit car that I am replacing a rotary engine with a type 4. Unfortunately, it was a test mule for CMC and they cut the frame horns to allow the rotary and 911 engine to fit. I want to know:
1. Can they be repaired well enough for a type four torque? Anyone know of a repair kit? If they can, should I get a berrian or Berg type support kit?
I have a rear engine support, would this surfice without the horns?
I can see where you will be needing some professional assistance to get that back together, more than likely.
The frame horns don't just support the engine/tranny they also position them in the car, so a goof would more than likely shove the engine one way or another in either axis.
Also the frame horns see a lot of torsion and thats hard on welds, so I'd never think of just doing a butt joint n that fram horn as it needs gusseting for strength. Also make sure you use something like the CSP torque bar to ad support later down the road.
Heck you could even use the torque bar adjusted to fit another bug to help position your frame horns in your car..... Buy the torque bar, install it in a known good car, adjust it to fit, then swap it to yours and you have a "control".
Jake,
where do I get this CSP traction bar? Actually I have a complete rear section of a pan from the inspection plate back that a friend from speedsterowners.com is coming in to weld for me. He has a Raby massive IV engine so he wants to make sure I get pushed into "the light"!
hopefully it gets welded correctly and things work out...
Here are two pics for you. I got them off of another forum (dune-buggy.com), but I don't remember who posted it. Looks like it might work for you, if you can get the tubing squared up right.
