Greetings everyone! My name is Dale and here is my short story. I am normally a VW 412 guy. My daughter LOVES the 914, and we found one not far from us for $300.00. It has an engine (not sure which one - 1.7, 1.8, etc) and a 5 speed tranny; The year of the car will be determined later.
OK, it does have a lot of rust along the bottom door edge and the floor pan. My questions are: Is this car a unibody construction like the VW 412, or separate floor pans (like a VW bug)? What specific things should I look for to rule out this car - ie., do 914s have specific problems that once rusted, CAN NOT be fixed for a reasonable price? I understand (as does my daughter) that it needs a LOT of work, but is it doable? The mechanical work is no problem, I'm just not sure about the body issues. By the way, I live in southeast Ohio if that makes a difference. THANKS FOR YOU HELP AND SUGGESTIONS!
SMILES
Dale

The 914 has unibody construction. Once the longitudinal members of the car get rusted, and the right-rear suspension console gets rusted, repairs are very time-consuming and money-intensive.
Pelican has a good "how to buy a 914" article. Just go to the "Porsche" section of the site, and look on the left-hand side. In the 914 section, you'll see a link.
Rust is the number one problem. In fact, it is probably all of the top ten list...
