I saw a beetle with a 396 ci chrysler big block at a car show a few years ago. The engine was in the front too. This was before I knew what to look for in VWs, so I cant answer any questions. It was green and white, if any of you have seen it.

PS: the car show was in Big Bear CA

"Hey, TC
Thanks, ........ You Gots the Big Feet . . . "

CMD,

Got a little "thing" goin' on about feet, don't cha?! Know what you mean. Once you own one of these suckers you look at every other homebuilt in a different light. And the first question is ALWAYS, "Where's he put his feet . . ?" I still wonder where to put mine.

Nope! No foot fetish.... Not really; it's just that I wanted to sit in the stock location for the " Sleeper" effect and it leaves no leg room! The Bug's I've seen with a front V-8 are all driven from the back seat! That's why I built the "Footboxes"

CMD,

Those V8 pics were a real treat! Got any more? If you do, could you email them to me? I've got a cable modem so size and speed aren't a problem.
I ought to have some pics of my ride REAL soon. It's now my daily driver so it looks well worn in. Seems kind of funny to drive it every day, it's like I'm breaking the law or something, you know . . . it's so WRONG somehow.

Thanks!

VW Beetle V8 Conversion Help

Post by Cadflyer »

I have a 71 super beetle. I am in the process of building a complete tube chassis with a SB V8 and a 9" narrowed rear end. My question is: has anyone done this type of thing before and if so where can i go to find information on such a project?
Thanks

You mean in a bug, or in a Super Beetle specifically?

I am doing the exact same thing!! mines a, was, 71 super. Ford narrowed 9" mustang II fornt suspension, sbc 283, tpi efi, megasquirt ecu, th350 trans, roll cage, blueprints for frame from the glass station, hand made rear suspension...

CMD, I got my pedals in place and the foot room ok. From the drivers seat I will have to keep my left foot pulled back. With a small sneaker I can operate the pedals just fine. I think my engine might be farther ahead then yours though. I got a picture posted on my album.

Very Nice!!
The pedal arrangement is like my '61 V-8 bug. I drive with my left foot resting on the roll cage upright.

Don't we all . . .

Hey,

How's it going with the red Beetle? Is the cooling all sorted out? Be hitting any of the North East shows this Summer. I'm in the middle of a 4.1 V6 powered 356 Porsche that I'll drag along if you're gonna show up.

Luck ! !

Too bad the old Mid-Engineering company isn't still around. They used to build a chassis primarily intended for the kit car scene (VW based kits) that slotted a Chevy V8 mid-ship, I think with Corvair tranaxle. But in an old article in Hot VWs (or VW greats?) they used it under a Beetle body. Talk about a sleeper! It had the typical flared fender look from the day - (hey, this was the 70's!), but I bet that thing would rock and roll!
Darned nice chassis for the time too. I think it even used some form of IFS. Likely also a Crown engine/transaxle adapter kit. The good 'ol days..... :)
