RAT Camper Special takes a lickin' and still Tickin'

Post by NO_H2O »

I made the last (for now  ) mod the the CIS w/Lambda system on my son's 73 RAT powered bus. It kept trying to lean out at hwy speed (Lambda brain still thinks it is in a Scirocco). So I fed the O2 sensor wire directly to an A/F gauge in the cab then to the input lug of a 500k linear taper pot. (wired like a volume knob in a guitar) then from the center output lug to the brain's O2 input. The third lug of the pot is wired to ground. So now I can effectivly turn down the O2 sensors voltage and make the brain think it is leaner than it realy is. I set out to test it by towing my bug to the BKC Dyno Day in Peachtree City, GA. and then on to Reynolds, GA. for the Drag races and car show. I pulled the car with no trouble. As I was packing to leave Reynolds I got a phone call that my 90 year old grandmother had passed away and we needed to go to Ohio for the funeral. My son is too big to fit in my wifes TDI Jetta so we took the Bus and the Jetta (Bus has no seat belts in back yet). As not to hold the caravan up I beat that bus like it owed me money. I turned it 4000 RPM +or- 300 RPM and averaged 75mph (225-60-16 tires on Audi wheels) and it pulled the moutains of Tenn./KY. like a champ. I had the 500k pot at mid scale and only had to touch it on the longer grades near the tops when the CHT got to 390 deg to keep away from the 400 mark. I had to make 3 fuel stops to my wifes zero in the TDI, but it was great to see the look on peoples faces when you come around them on an uphill grade in a VW Bus. On the trip home I was leading a Ford F350 Powerstroke towing a trailer and we were stide for stride from Lexindton to Knoxville. I pull of for fuel and the guy in the Ford did the same. As we were filling up He came to look at the Bus and said "I had one years ago but it NEVER ran like that one,,,, what the hell is in it" I showed him the engine and he was very impressed that it was still the old aircooled engine with stock displacement. I put my 12 gallons of fuel in and was on my way again while he has still pumping fuel into the big Ford. The trip from south of ATL to just south of Dayton took 7 hrs each way and I passed as many cars as I got passed by and had to back out of it when I saw the lawman so I would not pick up any tickets. I still need to lower the Bus and get some heavy sway bars/shocks so I don't out drive the suspension as that is now the limiting factor. Hat's off the Jake for a great engine combo and the Bosch K-jet CIS for the crowning addition.

Dave,
Thats one hell of a testimonial!

I consider the Camper Special to be one of my most effective engine designs and the one you have isn't even the most refinned version (what if you had that extra 2 degrees of duration on the exhaust side!)

We don't assemble many of them these days but the engine kits to compose it sure do sell like wildfire!

That cam would be sweet, but it sells like hot cakes and you were out of them when I put mine together :(
I still love this combo. There aren't many busses on the planet that pull like it. Unless it has a similar combo or the powerstroke.

Sounds like one hell of a motor, like the guitear idea.
