new engine temps
I have just installed my new 94x76 type4 in my car and the cyl. head temps and oil temps seem extremely high to me. Specs are as follows; 40drla,180air,140main,32vent 65idle,33pump; 3 bolt heads 42x36 , comp 8-1, DTM cooling with type1 under cyl. cooling tins. Timing 10degrees idle, 28 degrees @ 3000. Head temps 375 running in garage oil temps went to 220. I am seriously wondering if the cooling might be compromised by using the type1 tin rather than the type4 tin. Do the 371a heads have a propensity to run hotter than the 1800 heads? The reason for the 32 vents is I want the low end grunt from the get go. The engine I replaced is a 96x71, 2056 with 1800 heads, same spec cam, same carb set up except 60 idles, 8-3 comp, etc. Same DTM cooling EXCEPT type4 cyl.cooling tins. Its normal temps are 180oil and 275- 350 degrees with an occasional 375 under a heavy load uphill. Can the vast differences in temps be attributed to the different cooling tins? Do the 3bolt heads run hotter? I am ready to remove the engine and replace the tins, but before I do I' appreciate any input. Any suggestions Jake or anyone? Thanks, Seahag

Jake, The engine is installed in my Manx. I know that the 375 degrees under load is acceptable, however this is running in my garage for about 10minutes. The other engine had great operating temps, this new one is the one that is running high temps. The carbs are in sync, the timing is on, valves are adjusted, any other suggestions? Plugs look good.

The static tuning you have done may be inadequate... engines "want" certain timing and jetting, you can't just throw some initial settings at them and expect them to be correct.
Get the engine out and drive it, alter the timing, alter the jetting and etc.
what exhaust are you running? Exhaust has HUGE impacts on operating temps.
where is the CHT sender located?
everything is dependant upon everything else!

Are those Alfa carbs?
Idles are too big, drop to 55-60 and a 32 vent needs at LEAST a 145.......
High temps = LEAN!
