914 2.0 heads
can these heads be salvaged? they are from my 75' porsche 914... i was driving on the highway one day and heard a pop and then the sound of alot air pushing out for every stroke... the damage was from the #3cylinder. i nearly took the engine apart but i have yet to split the crankcase. everything looks good. the #3 barrel has some damage but i'm looking forward to jakes 2270kit.. i'm poor so maybe i can buy it piece by piece(At my own risk right!) i'd really like to use these for my rebuild so i need some input... can they be repaired? is it worth repairing? am i better off buying new heads?

Yes they should be able to be repaired
Hi, the liph showing on the head with the flame through will be surfaced.
Most of the damage will be removed while fly cutting to surface the heads.
Welding can be done to finish up the damage.
They do all type of welding for repairs. My 2.0 had three cracks and I had smaller spark plugs holes installed, which required welding. So yes to your question

And this is exactly why the head gsakets are NEVER TO BE USED!
The gaskets are the sole cause of this when they let get go- the combustion eats away at the head like a Torch!
Yes, they can be repaired. The heads on my 912E had the same failures, thats how I got the car at such a good deal.... Adrian at Headflow Masters welded them up for me and remachined them and that was 96,000 miles ago.
Just don't use the head gaskets when the engine goes back together! Add .030 of deck height instead.

Call Adrian at headflow master at 888 340 8979..
You can send a message here to haminc and see if he is willing to repair your heads. He is by far the best person to do this job but he and I are both totally getting away from head "rebuilds". With heads that are 30+ years old the casting repairs cost so much that one can buy a brand new pair of castings and be done with it.

I can repair those heads, but you won't save much if anything over the cost of new replacements. The other, "undamaged" chamber has a pretty severe sparkplug crack and I would bet the farm that there are also cracks under the ex seats (not to mention the issues with the ex. studs and the oval ex seal area).
All of those issues are repairable, and if no alternative existed we could get you back on the road, but times have changed and along with them have come a better alternative. Check with Jake on pricing for new replacements. You may save a little, but you'll have a seriously welded up pair of 30+ year heads. And if those repairs aren't performed properly you will not get the type of performance or long term reliability I suspect you are after. Otherwise why would you be building a T4?

Their flow is now duplicated within 2 CFM across the board. No more 30+ year old castings. No more shabby rebuilds. The Rookie wrote:i greatly appreciate both of your oppinions and saying so i'm looking farward to buying some of jake's cylinder heads. i just hoped salvaging a pair of the best flowing type4 heads around.....hmmm maybe i can sell them and collect some $$ towards some new heads..
Heads are now disposable. The only guys that will have benefit from OEM castings are SCCA and Vintage racers that have to use a casting with a VW part number.
Sell em while they are still worth something!
