carb sync

Post by BajaPorsche »

Hi guys, here's my situation.
I'm getting no reading on cylinder #4 with my sync tool. Nothing at idle or higher revs.
all other cylinders have a reading. #4 is flat.
any ideas?

Check your valves, make sure none are tight, do a compression check, if you find you have compression, check the idel jet.

Or you can check your idle jet first, then the main jet.

One of two things, no gas or no compression, or maybe your plug wire is off or bad plug?

Process of elimanation.

I'm going through that process of elimination now, hoping to avoid pulling the engine and pulling the head off.
Here's the background.
I was about 80 miles from baja on the mexicali side, towards San Felipe.
It started running ruff in 4th 5th gear under load, I made it into Baja and got to the VW parts house (racer stuff for alot of the baja racers, good prices too).
I bought points, condensor, rotor, cap and wires (plugs only had about 5K on em) then I replaced each unit, then test drove it, but none was the problem.... So I took off the top of 1 delorto 40, to check the jets, jets looked good, but I couldn't blow out the chambers, so i put it back together and back on the road home, once back in the US, I checked the compression, all at about 150psi +/- 5, so compression looked good. hobbled another 250 miles home, but made it (that idea of finishing whatever it takes kinda took over).

So, the next morning first thing was check the valves, #4 exhaauist was a little tight, that was it... reset it.

Put on an extra set of weber 40's, started it up, set the idle screws air screws, then set up the linkage and synced the carbs......all 4 cylinders working.... but still had a top end flutter, and I had to reset the air screws and the ssync's after running it........ drove about 5 miles on about 4 test runs, but still something wrong (I'm thinking it might be the modified 009, at this stage of the process).

But when backing into the driveway the ;last time, it started to make a Kathump noise, kinda sounding like it wanted to stall or freeze up (oil temp 175)..... not a metal to metal, but kinda like a hard rubber to hard rubber sound, but it didn't ssound good...... since at home I decided to test it, if it's gonna freeze let it freeze up here.... so I ran the throttle, and it ran, got past the Kathumping sound..... started burping out the carb at #4 with the Kathump sound, then cleared it......... since then, there has been no draft down through #4....

engine staarts up, runs kinda smooth, no smoke, no noise, just no downdraft through #4.......

I'm gonna check the valves this morning.
I checked the compression right outside of Baja, then again yesterday before the last test run, both times at 150 +/-5, but I checked the compression again only on #4, and I might have forgotten to open the throttle up completely.... only pulled 1 plug, but compression was at nothing.... maybe 10 or 15....

Does anyone think that maybe something got sucked into the cylinder when taking a compression test....... the Kathump was the sound of something rubber binding into the piston ccylinder section, then lodging into a valve and holding it open?
does that sound possible to anyone?
the engine starts, runs, no smoke, no noise........ but nothing on a sync reading from #4

found the problem. the rocker arm nut had come off. I just set the valves that morning, and I might not have recehcked the valves if not for this boards suggestions....
re-torqued all rocker arms nuts and reset the valves, and gonna add that one to the "to do" list when checking/setting the valves.

test ran about 15 miles, and that seems to have been the problem from the start.

many thanks!
