Transaxle Stage B Install

Post by jfnelson »

I am preparing to install my stage B transaxle. I have removed my currnet transaxle but can not get the wheel bearings off so I can transfer my axles over to the new transaxle. How do I remove the wheel bearing on my 68 ghia and get the existing axles off? Is there some special tool needed to get the bearing out?

Sounds awful, but I pounded mine off by hitting the big, solid parts of the axle tube with a dead blow hammer. Lot's of liquid wrench. This was not easy to do. Took a lot of pounding. Even after they started to move, it was slow going. But it worked and axle tubes seem none the worse for wear after all the beating I could dish out. Went back together without incident.

Or, drag the whole deal to your local machine shop and they can get them off.

Good luck!

They fit tigt.. As Doc explained this is a crude way to do the job but sometimes the only way.

Just make sure you have the axle tube perimeter bolts removed and start poundin, don't bend the shock mounts though...

Hat is your friend, just don't catch the tranny oil on fire if you use it!

Big hammer and a block of wood worked to get the bearings out. The snap-ring on one side I was able to get out but the other side is giving me fits. I've gone through 3 pair of snap-ring pliers, I keep breaking the points off. I asume the differintal slide gear should just slide out, I have not tried to remove this yet on the side I have apart.

That snap ring is a big one. I also broke my little "toy" SnapOn snap ring pliers, so I went down to AutoZone and found a MUCH BIGGER pair. Made all the difference and only about $10.

The differential side gears will just slide right out. I worked to make sure I kept the match between the axle, the side gear and the fulcrum plates. When I went back together, I measured tolerances per Bentley's and everything was on the high side of within range on my well used '63 trans. Several knowledgeable STFer's told me to put it back together and go.

Keep going!

I'm keeping track of everything left ant right and will keep things grouped together. I'm sure glad I'm doing all this, you would not believe some of the things I'm finding wrong with this car. Only had 3 motor mount bolts, Rear shocks are rusted through, Looks like a relay of some sort has been installed between the battery and the starter. Starter is all rusty also. So adding to my buy replace list. Even with everything I'm finding I feel I should have things back together in no time.
