Don't make me post the pictures I took of your engine before you do

We got our heads on earlier...hopefully tomorrow it resembles an engine. :P

I'm not sure the bus will be so fast anymore, as we wrapped-up in the garage a buddy of mine called me up and had me try out his 100CC 2-stroke pavement kart...Running parallel to I-5 you pass cars

  I have been a little busy. Sorry I still haven't taken pictures but I am 40 miles shy of my 500 mile tune up. I am 99.9% positive the rings have seated and I am going to lean it out a little. to clear up the loading up its doing when it idles. I will try and post pictures asap. I was getting 17 on CFTC and I am getting about 13 now Hmmm :?: but it is acting richer also and the oil is nolonger fuel contaminated. The bus still pulls like a train :P

Dan

Ps I have come across another 82mm crank can you say 85.5 x 82 baja engine  (do they make stroker pistons in the stock size??? I have never looked.)

PPS Good deal on the engine Chris. My buddy races shifter Karts I know what you mean a 125cc engine @ 12000rpm and doing 100+mph he let me take out his "slow" kart and I was doing about 70mph like right now  If I didn't drag race I would probably do shifter Karts they are wild, relatively cheap, and fit inside a pick up bed.

We got our engine running yesterday afternoon...just on the floor for now...but I'm excited.

It seems like it'll fit the bill...

As it sits now it's got a 1-1/2" Turbo muffler on a large flange 1-3/8" street header with stock heaterboxes (used the oxy-acet torch to help it fit)...and 42 DCNF's on top (F25's 190 airs, 135 mains). We've just got a blue coil and 009 set a ~7.5* static right now...our little engine diagnostic meter doesn't seem to be the most accurate tool, but it idles comfortably at ~850RPM and rev easily above 5K even with a stock weight flywheel.

We've ordered several sets of the new AA 92B's with thick wall (94 register) juggs for our future engines...even thinking about tossing this engine in Dad's 912E later down the road - then we could put a 2180 (or larger) together for the bus.

COOL Chris !!!! We are going to start a movement if we are not carefull.

I Just did my 500 mile tune up I have been leaning it out slowly and the engine seems to like it.

but when did the valves I found they all were a little loose which is good they are starting to settle down. but when I got to number 4 exaust I found

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h181/ ... 170147.jpg

The lash cap was ok and every thing seemes fine I found all the chunks and replaced the washers and clip.

The only other thing that has went wrong other than 3 oil leaks that I need to pull the engine to fix  is I have exploded a pully but it was a cheapo chinese one I have sense put a german one on.

here are some pictures of the installed engine I am going to pull it in a couple of thousand miles and fix the oil leaks re-torque the heads and clean it up.

here you go enjoy

The wife and I are thinking about doing this in 2007 http://www.acbustour.com

You up for it Chris?? put the new engine up to the test you got 13 months to de-bug.

Any one else??

Here is the Samba thread about it http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=145301

That's one hell of a camping trip dunno if I'll be game...but I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

On other news, the bus is fricken' sweet...almost certainly faster than my Dad's Beetle with a 1775 and ICT's  She can pull from ~1600RPM up and tops-out around 5,000RPM. I took a pretty darn steep hill about 80-100 feet tall in 3rd doin' 22-2500RPM. Seriously, just as fast as I was hoping for...Weeeeeee

It's awesome havin' a bus that you can poke it when travelin' on gravel and kick the ass out

Dad is going to have the permanent oil lines made this week after I make the bracket for the oil filter mount...and it also appears the old race sump we used has a crack (they were bottomed-out often coming out of #4 at Evergreen's 3/8ths) so we've got one on our way...other than that things are goin' pretty slick...well except for finding three sheared-off CV bolts in the driver's side stub axle while changing the engine.

It rocks having a bus that can climb hills and pass people. What I have noticed though is other drivers get "bus phobia" they will see me and have to pass no matter what then as they get in front of me they realise that they are doing 75 in a 50 and cut me off and then slow down.

But is cool to see people in shock by a bus that can climb hills .

I am still interested to see what it would do in the quarter mile. maby a battle of the busses. but it would take me 2 days to clean all the camping gear out to pass tech.

glad to hear that your driving it .

Come on...tech around here has been a joke for me and my slower cars...you must be too used to that 10 second business...

Bremerton is pretty strict but I would agree with you about Seattle. I have about 200#s in camping gear and another 200#s in tools I could get about a coupple of tenths out of that. Too bad I don't have a Canada westy with the reverse poptop It could be my sport not so compact wing.

I am going to pull mine in about 2000 miles to fix some leaks I am debating on pulling the heads for the push rod tube seals or using some spring loaded aluminum ones. the reason for the debate is having to re torque then again. or spring loaded and run it.

So, I guess I've got around 1,500 miles on the engine now...and it's been giving 17mpg (+/- 0.5 gallon) regularly - mostly highway driving 65-80mph with a little time spent above that (once to 90mph). I've got the MSD firing it now, but I'm still using the stock heaterboxes...planning on doing a merged 1-1/2" collector with some big-bore boxes still...maybe two mufflers...currently heat is excellent, but not too good ya' know.
I'm waiting on my MSD tach adaptor, so I don't know the RPM characteristics off the top of my head...absolute bottom of third gear is ~20mph and ~35mph for fourth.

Dad and I modified a 1-1/2" merged header to fit the bus with the big-bore boxes a few weeks ago...here are some pics:

Well, I've been driving mine 65+ miles a day (I've got more than 5k on it now) - I've taken it on 4 or 5 decent road trips, including Canada once...I put some larger wheels and tires on it the other day in order to lower my final-drive for more top-end...It'll do 70mph (3600RPM) as long as I want it to and the gas mileage has picked up a little, seein' ~19mpg now (with a weight of ~3500lbs)...the weather has been too poor to try and go over 90mph lately...but I think next spring with the addition of a small oil cooler 100mph might be do-able.

Only problem I've had was blowing up a speaker, but it was insured

Glad to here it's working out so far.

90 mph in a bus is a little scary, I can't imagine 100. I might be picking up a 78 that's had the type 1 conversion done using the kit from aircooled.net. It's running a 1641 though. Keep us updated, it's cool hearing from people who go against the trends.

Sorry to say but a 1641 in a late, late bus with an 091 would be absolutely awful...I can't see it being worth buying unless it was on the cheap. Thin cylinders, heavy bus, tall gearing :x

I've done 90 several times, and it's never been white nuckle...it's all about waiting for the right combination of pavement and weather....tell you what though 75mph up a rise in the highway that's being resurfaced in the rain - that makes for a handful
